Syco Entertainment, the brainchild of Simon Cowell and Sony Music, has teamed up with SFX Entertainment and T-Mobile to embark on their latest reality TV debut, “The Ultimate DJ”. Riding on the coattails of successful shows like The X Factor and Got Talent (America and Britain), the acerbic American Idol judge is planning to bring Electronic Music Culture (EMC) to the forefront of American television.
In a statement to the press regarding the goal of the forthcoming series, Robert Sillerman, Chairman & CEO of SFX Entertainment, expressed his sincere excitement for the project and his solid belief in its future.
“Bringing EMC (electronic music culture) to the world is our goal, and building a TV franchise in the USA is a key part of that strategy. It’s always exciting to work with Simon Cowell, and the creative power of the Syco organization is undisputed. They are the perfect partners for our vision. And we couldn’t be more excited to partner with T-Mobile US. John is the most exciting CEO of this generation, and I am personally inspired by the mobile revolution he and the team at T-Mobile are driving. Together, we share a vision of challenging the status quo and pioneering new territory in business, media and entertainment.”
When news of Cowell’s ambitions leaked in 2012, the reaction from dance music fans was less than inspiring. In fact, most of the public was pretty outspoken about their opposition to the show but despite the naysayers Simon Cowell has trudged onward in hopes of finding “the world’s greatest DJ”.
“We have been developing this concept for a while but our partnership with SFX has been a real game-changer for this format,” Cowell said in a press release. “It made complete sense for us to collaborate with SFX with their access to the best up-and-coming DJs and their great marketing platform to build new DJ talent.”
The competition will initially begin online. Those wishing to become the next Kelly Clarkson of the DJ world can submit their mixes to the show and based on a collection of social media votes, winners will be chosen to compete. Granted, the music that is most likely to make it through the contest is the kind that appeals to the most viewers and that could mean diluting the edgy sounds that draw us to this genre into something much more radio friendly. If that is the case, the show might never gain a following with those most involved in EMC but only time will tell.
