It seems like Skrillex is breaking all forms of convention with his new album, titled “Recess”. Though it’s not officially released yet, you can find full stream previews of his new songs in this post. Many of the collaborations are pretty stellar and include artists like Alvin Risk, Kill The Noise, Chance The Rapper, KillaGraham, The Ragga Twins, and even South Korea’s G-Dragon and CL.
Korean music’s first real introduction into the American mainstream was with Psy’s “Gangnam Style” in 2012/2013. Before that Diplo had worked with G-Dragon and T.O.P., members of top K-pop rap unit Big Bang; making the beats for their 2010 hit “Knock Out.” Additionally, in 2013, Diplo, Baauer, and Boys Noize contributed to G-Dragon’s album, Coup D’Etat.
Now, Skrillex has taken matters one step further by actually featuring G-Dragon and CL (of 2NE1) on his album. For me, it’s quite interesting to see K-pop flow into U.S. music, media, and clubs. Dance music is a prominent facet of Korean culture, so these collaborations actually make sense a lot of sense. “Dirty Vibe” is pretty remarkable and even includes rap lyrics in Korean with an exciting build and super fast and aggressive break down. The distortion of the voices are also a nice touch to coincide with his otherworldly “Mothership” aura.
With electronic dance music finally breaking away from over-done styles, we are starting to see a new strain of sounds by artists who aren’t afraid to investigate new directions. Props to Skrillex for trying something new and for introducing a cultured collective of artists and techniques on his new album.
