If you hated Skrillex for becoming popular before, well turn the hate dial up because the god of bro-step has just been nominated for a Grammy under the category best new artist. Skrillex is in competition with Bon Iver (not new), Nicki Minaj, The Band Perry and J. Cole. I wonder what label they’re going to slap on Skrillex? Whether they choose techno, electronic, dubstep or whatever else: will play a major role in how mainstream society views his music and stereotypes the rest of the electronic dance music community. He is the first electronic artist to ever get nominated for the award.

Regardless of the outcome, seeing Skrillex nominated for a best new artist Grammy is absolutely incredible. Who would have thought this was possible and Skrillex of all the artists out there!?!
This shows two things:
1.) Popularity of EDM. Electronic dance music has become such a big global phenomenon that it can no longer be ignored or brushed off by music snobs. Given how easy it is to produce and profitable the shows are, expect to start hearing Skrillex and more of your favorite artists on the radio soon.
2.) The Vultures are Moving in. I mentioned before how profitable electronic music can be. It’s simple to produce, the new Skrillex album Voltage was done mainly on a single laptop without the need of a full studio. Producing the events is highly profitable. A few things to consider when comparing a DJ and a traditional band: one person vs a group, a dj can spin for 4 hours (more time to drink), and the kids fucking love it.
About Skrillex: Skrillex or Sonny Moore is an electronic music producer who plays a mix of dubstep, electro house, glitch, and moobahton. He’s the former frontman from emo band From First To Last, but quit that shit to produce full time starting in 2008. After releasing his first EP Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites in 2010, his career has taken off. He owns OWSLA records, promotes other artists like Porter Robinson, and tours all over the world.
