Sudden album releases have become all the rage in music these days. Beyonce, Kid Cudi, and others have released albums with zero marketing or hype and it seems as though Skrillex may be the next artist to release a surprise album. Skrillex recently overhauled his website to announce a new mobile game called “Alien Ride.” The game tasks players to pilot a ship through a dangerous asteroid field. However, a new mysterious element has appeared on the game’s home screen: a locked folder labeled “secret” and a timer that ends at 6:30 PM EST.
The community of r/skrillex on reddit have seemingly cracked the code of the game to learn that the folder contains information which hints at a new album release. Reddit user Vanitious looked at the coding of the game to find files for 11 tracks and pre-order links for Itunes and Google Play. Vanitious also found coding that suggest a music player is included with the app.
Numerous other signs point toward the release of a new album. If the alien on Skrillex.com is clicked, he will utter one of many phrases. Some of those phrases are vocals from previously unreleased IDs, notably a collaboration with the Raga Twins. Skrillex also announced a new Mothership tour for 2014 this morning and has been playing many IDs during his recent shows, indicating plenty of finished, unreleased material. Reddit user Stach37 noted the app itself was developed by Motim Technologies Limited, a premier advertising company which focuses upon mobile advertising.
So what happens at 6:30PM EST today? Vanitious’ information points at the album gradually releasing over the next day, with the first song unlocking at 6:30. Given that the songs will link through the “Alien Ride” game, it can be assumed that it will only unlock after accomplishing parts of the game (such as new levels). The timestamps in the coding suggests a new song will release every thirty minutes.
One last hint that the album will release soon is a recently leaked flyer indicating future releases. This flyer lists the Skrillex album titled “Recess” will release as a physical copy on 3/18. This gives retailer a week to stock up on the physical copy of the LP. When the “Alien Ride” game is launched, the icon linking to the game is labeled as “Recess.”
