Brooklyn is the place you want to be for an unforgettable night of music, and the warehouse party to experience this was “Something Happening Somewhere.” This past weekend, New York City’s premiere underground music collective, Fiction NYC, debuted their SoHaSo, a.k.a, “Something Happening Somewhere,” warehouse party at 23 Meadows. Booming with endless hours of deep house and techno from the Something Happening Somewhere and Maeve label artists, Bushwick was in for a special treat as we saw performances from Nuno Dos Santos, Love Over Entropy, and special guest Baikal. The three top-notch players offered a diverse blend of beats that engulfed the dark and intimate warehouse until sunrise. In addition, we would witness an incredible b2b set from Nuno and Baikal that would leave the crowd in awe.
Running from 11pm-8am, we prepared ourselves for a marathon of after-hours feels as we entered the warehouse sometime around 2 am. As we walked in with ease we noticed that the space appeared to stretch back endlessly, offering the cool Brooklynite crowd plenty of room for dancing and activities. We were soon struck by the hypnotic visuals and lights subtly flooding the dance floor. Not far from the entrance stood the main stage where each artist would play in between two large, antique, Greecian-like pillars. The entire setting was made up just right; it was refreshing to see a production that complimented the space and allowed the focus to be the music rather than have an over-the-top spectacle that at times can be too distracting. As we made our way to the dance floor, we were greeted with smiles and bodies entrenched in the sultry beats that aerated the warehouse. As is tradition in Brooklyn, the crowd was made of an eclectic bunch that was ever-so-cool, laid back, and there for one reason and one reason only: to vibe out to good music. The rhythmic sounds of deep house and techno quickly overtook our bodies and we immediately knew we were in it for the long haul.
Baikal would throw down his signature sounds and we’d hear a couple of tracks off his Pelican’s Flight EP in addition to his remix of Vaal’s “Wander To Hell”. His b2b set with Nuno definitely came out as one of the highlights of the night. The helm of the Something Happening Somewhere label, Dutch native Nuno played an mesmerizing set that was easily the most impressive of the night. With that said, one of our other favorites was Love Over Entropy, who delivered a mainly deep house mix while dropping a few tracks off his latest EP and a handful of unreleased tracks.
The incredible atmosphere, music, and company of new friends made it all too easy to lose track of time, not to mention daylight savings snuck up on us out of nowhere. But alas, we said our goodbyes around 7 am, give or take, and regrettably made our way to the Grand Street subway station to head back into Manhattan.
This isn’t the first party that Fiction NYC has thrown in the city and it certainly won’t be the last. The company immediately left a lasting impression when it took to Facebook Friday morning to reassure all that they’ve gone through every measure possible to make the event go off with a bang. Anyone who’s been to a warehouse party in Brooklyn-or anywhere in the world for that matter-is familiar with the inevitable pre-party fears of whether or not the event will actually occur or be shut down due to fire codes, local authorities, etc. With a genuine feel for party goers best interest and experience in mind, Fiction NYC posted a play-by-play of all it did to ensure that this event would be nothing less than an enjoyable and successful night. This, of course, set the good vibes meter HIGH before the weekend even began. As promised, the party was incredibly well-organized, capacity and space was on point, and everything else from the music to the visuals to the crowd was sweet icing on the cake.
If you haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing a Fiction NYC party, then we highly recommend you put it at the top of your to-do list. Furthermore, if you missed “Something Happening Somewhere” the least you can do to ease your regret is check out the incredible artists that made for an exceptional night.
Head to Fiction NYC’s socials to connect with the SoHaSo artists and stay up-to-date on the next party that is sure to be nothing less than monumental.
