Scottish DJ and producer SOPHIE has died following a sudden accident this morning (January 30).
SOPHIE, best know for her hypnotizing, soft spoken lyrics intertwined with imaginative bass sound design, has passed away. Early morning while attempting to climb up to the higher ground and get a better view to look at the moon, she slipped and fell. She was 34 and in Athens, Greece at the time.
In a statement, the labels Transgressive and Future Classic wrote:
“True to her spirituality she had climbed up to watch the full moon and accidentally slipped and fell. She will always be here with us.”
SOPHIE gained traction in the European scene after breakout hits like the house-adjacent single, “Nothing More to Say”. Later on, her songs like “Bipp” showed a maturity in her sound. She re-envisioned herself with this disembodied anthem and gathered international acclaim. Tracks like “Lemonade” and “Hard” mixed her soft-spoken voice and innovative sound design into her songs further reshaping her image. Her 2014 collaboration with PC Music founder, A.G. Cook, and Quinn Thomas should also be mentioned here. The track called “Hey QT” was a hyperactive cotton candy fest full of clever hooks.
SOPHIE’s influence on pop and electronic music stems far exceeds her solo discography and includes an expansive collaborative catalog. This repertoire includes productions for Vince Staples, Madonna, and, prominently, Charli XCX, who said in 2019:
“There are very few artists who make me feel something up my core and make me wanna cry. Justice and Uffie made me feel something when I was 14, and I didn’t really have that feeling again until I met Sophie. I felt this rush of: Fuck, this is the coolest shit I have ever heard.”
In a statement, SOPHIE’s representative wrote:
“At this time respect and privacy for the family is our priority. We would also ask for respect for SOPHIE’s fanbase, and to treat the private nature of this news with sensitivity.”
