On Thursday Guccimen became the latest in the ever-growing list of Space Jesus side projects. Created with All Good Records artist and long time friend Freddy Todd, Guccimen pushes the boundaries of the two artist’s sounds.
Unlike Space Jesus’ project with Supersillyus, Schlang, Guccimen focuses less on psychedelic sounds and melodies, and more on wonky sound design, phat bass, and percussive textures.
Pnoid starts the EP off right with glitchy sounds overlaying 808 kicks, before introducing its lo-fi main melody, which is soon taken over by wobbly bass and lush pads.
In “Kings Napp” off-kilter percussion lead into an indian guitar melody played overtop punchy bass kicks. The tune’s second drop takes on a bit more influence from psy-trance, making the bass more subtle and the drums even more prominent.
The EP’s most powerful track is without a doubt “Goal’t”, which focuses on wonky alien noises arranged in a way that is unsettling and often overwhelming, while also being irresistibly cohesive and immersive. The metallic nature of the track gives it a kind of intensity that is hard to compete with, especially in later sections where the duo starts introducing chilling melodies around the already huge basses.
Guccimen brings out the best of its founders; it builds on the affinity the two share for unsettling sounds and progressive arrangements, creating a product that is familiar but completely unexpected. Their potential goes far beyond these three tracks, and we cannot wait to see what other madness they in the pipeline.
