Space Kadet has returned to 2019 with the promised new music, first with their announced new LP, Simulated Reality, to go live on February 1st. Out of the kindness of their hearts, they released a teaser track to the madness that is about to come our way with their single, “Oumuamua”, featuring STS9’s incredible percussionist Jeffrey Lerner. When we last spoke to Space Kadet, they mentioned wanting to tickle brains, and we definitely see that from them on this track.
We feel ourselves land within the track at the beginning as experimental sounds filter back and forth in our ears. Hand drum rhythms intertwine with modulating synth climbs, quickly building up to what we expected to be a sick drop but they smooth us into the warmest of transitions, the bass and guitar wrapping it all together. The way the fingers pop on the hand drums and the guitar riffs intricately play off each other, rhythm lovers will be in a dream. The Space Kadet crew isn’t done with us at because at the 2:42 mark they completely switch the vibe. They bring in an ominous melody before smacking us back into a dark bass odyssey. After taking us to the dark side, they float us back into that happy place before simmering to a close.
“Oumuamua” a culmination from what we saw at their Imagine Music Fetival performance, inspirations for their changing sounds, and what the new year is to bring. You can stream “Oumuamua” on SoundCloud now. Keep up with the band through their socials below for their LP release, Simulated Reality, on February first. If you’re itching to join Space Kadet’s galactic odyssey, you can catch them at Aisle 5 in Atlanta next week.
