Steve Aoki‘s been in the news a lot of late for reasons he’d probably rather forget. From trampoline mishaps at a recent show in Puerto Rico to the tragic aftermath of a poorly planned event in Madrid, it’s been easy to over look what he’s best known for: producing tracks that hit like a cake to the face.
Enter ‘It’s The End Of The World As We Know It’, a three track EP which dropped the other day on Aoki’s Dim Mak label. Featuring a slew of guests, the EP is Aoki’s middle finger to the Mayan Doomsday, with enough four-on-the-floor beats to keep you dancing even after we’re all consumed in a lake of fire.
‘Singularity’, co-produced with labelmate Annger Dimas, kicks the EP off with heavy, syncopated rhythms and a vocal contribution from My Name Is Kay. Kay’s “we’ll never die” refrain plays well over the synth-cuts and lasers that make up the bulk of the track. ‘Omega’ starts off a little more restrained, with a pitter-pattering of keys leading into heavier drums and higher register synths. Featuring vocals from Miss Palmer of ‘No Beef‘ fame, the song features an electro drop and a house drop, but nothing to get too excited about. The final track, ‘Transcend’, features Danish DJ Rune RK, and is the EP’s ‘Language’ (Ever since Porter Robinson released his lauded single ‘Language’ a few months ago, every electro-house producer and their mothers want a soul-searching, tear-jerking track in their repertoire). That said, it’s a solidly uplifting electro-house anthem, one that you’ll certainly hear dropped many times in the months to come.
While Aoki doesn’t reinvent the wheel on ‘It’s The End Of The World As We Know It’, he reminds us he’s pretty damn good at replicating it. You can stream the EP below, or grab it on Beatport.
