Last Friday night, the electro-pop/alt-rock band, Stokeswood threw down in celebration of the release of their new album 2075 in raging fashion that should leave them gliding on a cloud-nine high straight through to the next celebration of their musical styling’s to come. It was a well-deserved break from playing the go-to opener, rocking the headlining slot for family, friends, and the dedicated fans they’ve drawn via their charismatic live performances.
The setting was the ATLien approved, favorite West Side venue for local show addicts, Terminal West. This mid-size venue that regularly sells out artists such as ill.Gates, EOTO, TAUK, and Thriftworks just to name a few of our favorites, was the perfect homecoming spot for Atlanta-based Stokeswood to show off the fruits of their labor.
Today the Moon, Tomorrow the Sun and Jungol warmed up the stage for Stokeswood kicked off their set with an older hit “Forest Face.” The lights were close to something you would see at a Pretty Lights show, beautifully done and beyond visually stimulating, but an odd fit at times juxtaposed with the band’s material. The strain to create a rave-like atmosphere was a hint distracting and took away some from the terrific performance that they otherwise graced us with. Then again, the band has thrived because of their ability to dance across genres and refusal to comprise to fit a piece of any musical puzzle…so go on with your bad selves.
The new album was of course showcased in full, and the band closed with a Nine Inch Nails cover of “Closer.” Don’t miss Stokeswood at one of their many upcoming stops across southeast including Athfest this weekend in Athens, Georgia.
2075 is available now for download on iTunes.
