We’ve been binge listening to “Cream on Chrome” since April, and now a full week before the new album’s official release date we can stream the rest of the magic that lies within Ratatat’s Magnifique for free via NPR Music. A mid-week pick me up never felt so good as access to this long awaited installment by the unconventional duo of Mike Stroud and Evan Mast.
We have about as many words as are used in Magnifique to describe this collection of easygoing rock coated in minimal electronic tones. It’s just that good. The album has something for everyone from the smooth guitar riffs of “Pricks of Brightness” to the electricity of “Nightclub Amnesia.” The ambience of “Drift” and the title track, “Magnifique,” just take you places in such an unexpected way. It’s insane how a sound so smooth can create such a vibrant reaction. It’s really just impossible not to boogie down to “Cold Fingers” and “Abrasive.” Ratatat has easily delivered the most satisfying record of the summer…quite possibly the year.
Magnifique will be available for download on iTunes June 7/17, and if you’re lucky enough to have Ratatat coming to a city near you this summer don’t be a fool and get your tickets soon.
