A rising figure in the electronic music scene, burgeoning producer and composer by the moniker of Super Duper has just delivered his jaw-dropping EP, Sessions Volume One, and it is pretty safe to say that it is a real treat for Future Bass enthusiasts. Comprised of six unified, yet distinctive tracks, Sessions Volume One is a unique blend of vibrant synths, bellowing snares, and grooving bass lines, with several tracks also being complemented artfully by some dulcet vocals from artists such as Remmi, Ruelle, Patrick Baker, and Jung Youth.
A truly refreshing compilation of tunes, this EP stands out amongst the plethora of tracks released on the daily, and is clearly representative of this Nashville artist’s proficiency with production. We were fortunate to have asked Super Duper a few questions about this release, as well as his inspirations and live performance tactics, to which we received some thoughtful answers.
Sessions Volume One can be streamed above on SoundCloud, and is available for purchase via iTunes. Check out the interview below!
1. First off, congratulations on the release of your latest LP, Sessions Volume 1. Did you have a particular vision in mind when creating it? Do you feel that you were able to fully actualize that vision?
“I did have a vision as I started collecting songs for this album. Since the Super Duper project has gained some momentum I’ve started to collaborate a lot more, and do some producing for other artists. So, instead of trying to separate these 2 worlds, I wanted to have an album within the Super Duper project that highlighted some of these collaborations. That’s why it’s called Sessions. Each week for the past couple of months, I’ve had different artists come over to collaborate. Each song we worked on is different, but still has my aesthetic fingerprint on it. I also wanted the album to feature Nashville based vocalists as a way to show people a different side of music city, which is usually known for country and rock. It wasn’t something I had to force; every artist I worked with had similar tastes and goals for their own music. As a result, writing with everyone on this album was effortless.”
2. From where did you draw inspiration for some of the tracks on this album? Were you influenced by certain artists (electronic or non-electronic)?
“Most of the songs on the album have some sort of 80’s influence. I listen to a lot of M83 and Air, and I wanted to create tracks that had some nostalgic characteristics, but I also wanted to do it in a way that felt new and modern.”
3. Your music is a unique, and interesting conglomeration of genres and styles, how does this reflect your personal music tastes?
“I think it reflects my musical tastes perfectly. For the most part, I listen to electronic music of all styles, but now that electronic music has infiltrated every genre I listen to all types of music. I try to expose myself to a lot of pop / top 40 music (because I secretly love it), and anything that might pop up in the dark corners of Soundcloud. I try not to ignore anything mainstream or experimental.”
4. You’ve played a number of sizeable gigs as of late, including appearances with The Glitch Mob, and The Chainsmokers. Can you name some staple tracks (from artists other than yourself) that you like to feature in your sets?
“I actually play about 95% original music during my live performances. My live setup is pretty different from most electronic acts. I trigger samples and play synth parts and I have a drummer who plays all of the drum parts from my songs. We try to keep it interesting though, so during a mellow part of the show we have a verbed out remix of a Tears For Fears song, and during a more energetic part of the set, we do a big trap remix of ‘Intergalactic’ by the Beastie Boys that is really fun.”
5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
“I’d love to have a big live show that is more visually driven and possibly be working on Sessions Volume 2 or 3 :)”
