The Spirit of Suwanee Music Park’s Hulaween Festival is a short 7 weeks away – so obviously it’s an appropriate time to start crafting your list of must-see sets. If you’re into the style of jazzy, soulful electronic music that has been has been exploding in popularity over the past few years, then your list needs to include Michal Menert – highlighted, starred, and underlined. Equal parts composer and producer, Menert has spent the past 15 years experimenting with various styles of music and cementing himself as a premiere pioneer in the macrocosm of electro-soul music.
As an integral member of the original Pretty Lights duo with childhood friend and partner Derek Vincent-Smith, Menert worked to develop the PL flavor of tracks that were rooted in dub and hip-hop yet undeniably funky and brimming with soul. Pretty Light’s first album, Taking Up Your Precious Time, was coproduced by Menert and released in October of 2006. After eventually splitting from the PL label, Menert went on to spearhead a brand of his own: Super Best Records. The concept of the label is simple: have artists collaborate together and promote eachother and focus on putting out vinyl instead of digital albums. While he’s not running his record label, Menert is working on music with everyone from his live band, The Pretty Fantastics, to Grateful Dead member Mickey Hart and String Cheese Incident drummer Jason Hann. Currently, Menert is gearing up for an evening at Red Rocks with STS9 and has been not-so-subtly hinting that we’ll be hearing new music very, very soon.
Scroll through his Soundcloud below for a preview of what’s to come, and catch Menert this October at Suwanee Hulaween to hear for yourself how this man is changing the soundscape of electronic music.
