Taiki Nulight has been one of our favorite new artists to emerge on the scene ever since we caught his set at the Trinity Vale stage of Middlelands Music Festival this year. He just dropped his new EP Dead End on AC Slater’s Night Bass Records, and we are immediately adding it to playlists. For those that don’t know, the young producer that hales from Brighton has been killing it over the past couple of years. He’s worked with heavy hitters on original productions and collaborations with the likes of AC Slater, Low Steppa, My Nu Leng and been heavily requested for remixes for artists like Zeds Dead’s “Frontlines” and Keys N Krates “She’s So High”. We’ve been anxiously waiting for his next EP, since his last Agent Moody was full of strange, bass house goodness that goes off the beaten path of what most would expect from the sub genre. It’s this uninhibited desire to explore the weird parts of percussive beats and warbling synths that has brought Taiki into the spotlight of bass favorites and into our hearts.
Getting into the EP itself, it’s a four track collection that shows the talents and specific flavor Taiki brings to his sound production. The first on the list “Dead End” builds up interplaying rhythms and throughout the track it’s as if the different beats and wobbling synths are having a conversation. The interestingly titled, “Horn Porn” collab with Chris Lorenzo definitely takes on a Halloween vibe, with wavering melodies that have a haunting feel that bounce in between the beat. “Everybody in the Club” with Mikey B has a high energy buildup and dives into a grooving bassline that has dark intentions, not that we mind. The darker the better. Finishing off the EP “Trippin’ Up” is a playful mixer of wonky and warped sounds effectively placed in the dark depths that Taiki Nulight knows how to draw out of the synthesizer.
