Chime spins a melodic dubstep twist to the breathtaking, scenic battles from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in his new remix of “Talus Battle”.
For his next gamer hit, the Leeds producer Harvey Thompson wanted “Talus Battle” to be more epic and memorable from the original, orchestral track. The Zelda soundtrack is ambient and alluring, filled with minimal melodies and simple piano riffs to emphasize the discovery and exploration into unknown, magical worlds. As Link explores the kingdom of Hyrule, he defeats Stone Taluses, the stone golems scattered throughout the game hiding valuable gems. Inspired by his favorite stone creatures, Chime contrasts the song’s serene tone to Link’s wild adventures through unexpected bouncy basslines, playful melodies and dirty Switch drops.
Video game inspirations always followed Chime’s musical journey. Along with his last Zelda remix of “The Great Fairy Fountain”, Chime found his grooves from the best of both musical gaming worlds.
Remixing music from video games allows me to combine two of my favourite things. Since a great deal of my early musical development came from listening to basically nothing but video game music, it feels like a completely natural progression for me as an artist. What I also enjoy about it is going beyond just referencing the music. I love to tribute the game itself or the experience within the game as the music plays.
For example, “Megalovania” is another battle theme from the game Undertale that I remixed last year. With that, I wanted to reference the entire experience of the battle by including sound effects of the enemy character’s attacks and voice, and generally mimic the epic vibe of that moment in the game, taking it to another level via the Electro genre I converted it to. You might also recognise this approach in the “Talus Battle” remix with the stone crumbling sounds in the breakdown and the sampling of the Nintendo Switch’s well-known sonic branding (the click). Some of the basses I used were even influenced by the game’s amazing sound design and foley.
“Talus Battle” proves to be another colorful banger from Rushdown, a label and collective project for melodic bass artists that Chime’s been cultivating alongside artists like Rob Gasser and Brig from their trio collab “What the Funk”. From working with Firepower, Daily Earfood, and Most Addictive Records, Chime’s juggled the ends of bass music and next, he says he can’t wait to reveal secrets about the anticipated collab with Teminite.
