Welcome. Follow us down the rabbit hole on Mondays as we explore the deep, dark sounds of the underground. In our new music series, we’ll be highlighting five of our favorite tunes in techno, tech house, deep house and minimal; from the nonchalantly ambient to the aggressively provocative. “Techno” is used as a general umbrella term, although it applies to a specific style of music that originated from Detroit in the ’80’s.
What started as a social movement eventually flowered into its own distinctive genre, mostly credited to the innovative Juan Atkins. Generally, techno BPM ranges from 120-155, depending widely on the particular sub-genre and sound devices involved. Subsequently, many influences have impacted the genre from jazz to hip hop, soul, disco, electronica and even pop. Prepare to lose yourself to dance, and Tech This Out!
1. The Hacker – Shockwave (Gesaffelstein Remix)
“Shockwave” is one of our favorite remixes ever, concocted by the genius that is Gesaffelstein. His name literally translates to “ideal work of art” in German, so you can bet this guy is a legit artiste. His sounds are experimental by nature, often immersed in dark overtones. Enjoy this blast from the past dominated by old school synths, retro vocal chops and super punchy claps. You can even jam out to this song in GTA V on the dance radio station!

2. Joeski – Set In My Mind (Original Mix)
Now let’s slow it down a little with Joeski’s minimal masterpiece, “Set In My Mind.” The eerie female vocal sends the listener into a trance, while old school vocal chops incite a furious desire to start break dancing. There’s a certain fluidity and uncertainty associated with techno, both of which this gem has in spades.

3. Apollonia – Sona
We’re quickly picking up speed in this energetic, funky tune by Apollonia. Consisting of three established DJ’s who have combined their powers to create a techno super trio, there’s a lot to love about the Ibizia island vibe Apollonia has cultivated with “Sona.” The combination of introspective vocal samples, upbeat synths, and a consistent bassline makes this one of our favorites off Tour à Tour.

4. Sam Paganini – Another Chance
Releasing his Satellite album on Adam Beyer’s Drumcode label about two months ago, Sam Paganini’s songs have been circulating in our favorite deep/techno sets. The quality of his album in unparalleled, and “Another Chance” serves a healthy helping of robust, layered arpeggios. This is the kind of tune you can listen to for hours, before realizing that you’ve completely lost track of time.
