There is a great variety and beauty in the EDM world that often goes overlooked. Today we start our new series The Art of EDM with the goal of highlighting some of the talented non-musical artists that help make electronic music a unique experience.
Android Jones, an alumnus of Ringling School of Art and Design currently residing in Colorado, is no stranger to the festival world. Best described as a “digital painter,” Jones has created an immense body of work. He has become well known for his many layered, psychedelic works and live performances using a custom-built digital set up. He participated in the Grateful Dead Fare Thee Well Tour and his work has been projected on the Sydney Opera House and the Empire State Building. A long time member of the Burning Man community, Android has traveled the world exhibiting his work and has contributed to events on six continents.
At the center of Jones’ work is a dialogue of spirituality and altered states of consciousness. Describing his work as Electro-Mineralism, Jones attributes his ability to create to the wonders of technology, crediting the planet’s resources for advancements in art production. Manipulating light and energy, Android Jones captures complex concepts while utilizing his formal background in the arts. Described as a digital alchemist, he is determined to alter the viewer’s perception, pushing the boundaries of the imagination through the use of innovative media forms.
“I have seen things in this life that I am incapable of translating into words. In my practice I have visited realms where the imagination ends, and the terrifying beauty of infinity unfolds over and over again.
-Android Jones, 2013
If I could distill into words exactly what motivates me to create the art that I make then it would not be worth making it. Instead I have chosen the Pen.
Honestly I don’t know why I make this art, or what compels me to keep creating it; it’s a mystery I intend to pursue for the rest of my life, and each image brings me closer to the Ultimate Truth.”
While Android Jones has taken a step back from live visuals recently to focus more on his family, that does not mean he has stopped creating. Contemporarily he is actively working on digital drawings like the one depicted below. They are often highly limited in color, with a focus on digital technology and the human form.
“It really centers around my experience that I’m having while I’m creating. It’s like assembling a whole army of content. Like a painting is a battleground sometimes. I’m fighting myself, I’m fighting my expectations, I’m fighting my doubts, or my fears, I’m fighting the clock.”
