Australian DJ/producer veterans, Vance Musgrove and Mikah Freeman, better known as The Aston Shuffle, have been producing music together for over a decade. Their dynamic tracks and remixes have become staples in our playlists over the years, and have been on our radar more than ever in 2017.
This month, the duo dropped their dance friendly single, ‘Pass You By‘ on the Magician’s ‘Potion,’ as well as their much anticipated monthly compilation series, ‘Only 100s’. The fourth installment of the mix series features 16 of their current favorite tracks, from artists like Will Clarke, Riton, Calvin Harris, Claptone, and more.
RaverRafting recently had the opportunity to chat with Vance about their past ‘Only 100s’ series, career highlights, and plans for the year. We recommend kicking back, pressing play above, and checking out our exclusive interview below!
RR – Congratulations on the second installment of your ‘Only 100s‘ monthly mix series! What goes into/what do you look for when selecting music?
AS – This is our 7th year of doing a weekly radio show (Friday Night Shuffle, on triple j in Australia), not to mention over 10 years of DJing together, so the process of picking tracks has become second nature to us now. It’s a hard thing to really put your finger on, but when you know you know.
RR – We love all of the tracks/artists on your ‘Only 100s’ mix. If you had to choose your favorite track(s) from last month’s mix, which would you choose?
AS – For me, it’s probably Pnau “Chameleon”, but Mikah might have a different opinion on that one!
RR – This might be tough, but if you could only choose one artist featured on your mix to collab with right now, who would you choose?
AS – Jax Jones is on a huge roll at the moment, and Dombresky is doing some amazing stuff at the moment, so those two guys are right up there I reckon.
RR – Is there anything exciting you guys are working on in 2017 that you can share with us?
AS – We’ve got a new track coming out very soon which we’re super excited about, but we can’t share many details of that one just yet! Beyond that, we have quite the stack of music we’ve been working on which will make its way out there in 2017.
RR – What would you say were some of your career highlights in 2016?
AS – It was particularly awesome to have our music supported heavily by The Magician in 2016 – we’ve been huge fans of his for a long time, so to get that level of support from someone we look up to like that was hugely gratifying. Playing in Europe was another big highlight of 2016, we’ve always loved playing to European crowds and the shows we did in 2016 were among the best shows of the year!
RR – You have a few shows coming up this month in the U.S. Can we expect more U.S. shows later in the year or any festival appearances?
AS – More U.S. shows are certainly on the cards for 2017. I’m based in NY now, so it’s great not to have to fly all the way over from Australia to play to our U.S. fans.
RR – Final question…With producing, playing shows, your Friday Night Shuffle radio show on triple J, and now your monthly mix series, when do you guys find time to sleep?
AS – We do still find the time to snooze every now and again, believe it or not – unless we’re on the road!
