Tucked into an unsuspecting strip mall just a few blocks away from the madness taking place at Bassnectar’s Bass Center X, another party was in full swing. The Virginia-based production company. The Bassment, presented their three day Big Bang! event at PBR and Tapps in Hampton, Virginia over Labor Day weekend. Besides being an alternative for those looking for a break from three days of Bassnectar, the party served as the unofficial move for hoards of partyers who were looking for a few more hours of music after exiting the coliseum each night. Raging from 8pm to 3am on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the event featured a range of heavy hitting artists whose various takes on bass music ranged from wobbling dubstep to glitch-hop to gritty, grimy, riddim- style tracks. Throughout the evening, the wild-west styled venue — complete with a mechanical bull — was transformed from a run-of-the-mill sports bar to a covert nightclub complete with lasers, LED lighting systems, and thousands of watts of bass.
Friday’s show opened to the sounds of Digital Ethos, EastGhost, and and Mad-Decent affiliate Champagne Drip, whose rework of Bassnectar’s “You and Me” was featured on the official Noise vs. Beauty remix EP. Party-goers filed in from the hotels surrounding the venue, turning the entire area into a small village of bassheads. Saturday night’s headliners included the old school stylings of Jantsen, who headlined alongside Craz, a rising star in the world of hip-hop derived dubstep. Sunday’s show featured an extended venue at Tapps to accommodate guests who came out to dance to Wakaan Record’s Luzcid and Subcarbon/ SMOG affiliate Boogie T.
“Frankly, we were able to convert a sports bar into an after party spot by going back to our roots and drawing from our experience with turning KC’s music alley in Fredericksburg, VA into what we originally dubbed The Bassment,” said co-owner Matt Rocholl. “Our biggest challenge was moving the entire show from Tapps the first two days to PBR for the third day, as we had to do a complete production and operations redesign. We are incredibly thrilled with how everything turned out and want to give a huge shoutout to the best bassment family staff would could have dreamed of having, Joe from PBR Hampton, and most importantly all the bassheads that choose to rage out with us! Til next time! Much love!”
Crafting an after party that is low-key enough to serve as a post-show chill out, yet still packed with enough energy to keep the party going for 7 hours is no easy task, but The Big Bang proved that The Bassment has secured a spot as expert authorities in the world of post-event parties.
