The Crystal Method has released The Trip Home, a new album unearthing the acclaimed duo’s classic sound under a brilliant new light as Scott Kirkland takes the reigns solo.
Since solidifying themselves as frontmen of the big beat genre and 90s electronica movement, Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan have continued to be trailblazers in electronic music’s ever-evolving landscape. Now, 21 years after their platinum debut album Vegas, the legendary duo unveils a new chapter as one. In 2016, Jordan announced his retirement from the industry, handing control over to his other half. This means The Trip Home not only marks The Crystal Method’s 6th studio album, but also the inception of Kirkland as a full-fledged solo act.
But before a new beginning and new music could truly come to fruition, Kirkland had to revert back to basics to find his sound. This required firing up his arsenal of analog synths and reconnecting with his collection of vintage gear. The result was the album’s first released single “Holy Arp,” a resurgence of the duo’s pioneering sound spun into a futuristic take. “As soon as I got that track going, I knew I had found the direction for the new album,” Kirkland said. “It’s an angry, ballsy, bombastic trip down the inner workings of the vintage ARP 2600 synth.”
Out now on Tiny E Records, The Trip Home is made up of 12 divinely moody tracks that showcase varying organic productions, from the impassioned cries of “Ghost in the City” featuring shredding guitar licks, to “There’s a Difference,” a re-imagining of the track “Difference” off The Crystal Method’s 2014 self-titled album, delivering an alternative rock meets electronica hybrid, to the haunting melodic sound of “Turbulence,” whose lyrics echo the album’s theme of forging ahead into a new day — “a journey begins when everything ends.”
Kirkland said the album is a culmination of his 25 years in the music industry. “It’s the journey back to all the things that got me here—the touring, the music, the fans—and keep me here. But there’s always home. At the end of it, I go home to my family, I go home to my studio, and then I go back out. It’s a circle.”
