Have you heard of The Flexican yet?
With a face and figure that simply belong on a catwalk, The Flexican is someone you should get familiar with. His beach-y, Latin sounds make you want to roll down the windows and catch the first flight to Cancun. Raised in Mexico City and professionally trained at The School for Audio Engineering in Amsterdam, Thomás Goethals has since established a sizable following who attend his monthly “Yours Truly” shows around Holland with his partner-in-crime, Sef.
The Flexican played a huge role in producing ‘Watch Out For This (Bumaye)’ with Major Lazer, Busy Signal and FS Green, and with the track’s recent music video release as well as the positive feedback on Major Lazer’s ‘Free The Universe‘ album, we don’t see anything other than a bright future for Flex.
We had a casual chat with our new friend The Flexican – read it below to learn more about the DJ who looks like he never left fashion week.
1. Let’s begin with a question we’re all curious about… has anyone ever asked you to be a model?
Yes, they have, but that wouldn’t be something I would like to do as a profession. I wouldn’t mind being the face of a brand that fits my brand “Yours Truly” though…
2. “The Flexican” is an interesting name. How’d you come up with it?
My friend Sef, who I work with a lot, came up with this name. I was born in Mexico, so I’m a Mexican, and my style is flexible – so The Flexican.
3. You’ve been based in Amsterdam for a while now. Do you plan on changing your home base any time soon?
No, I don’t. I love Amsterdam, I definitely want to settle here for a while.
4. Did you ever expect that the “Yours Truly” shows would blow up the way they did?
No, never. It was always supposed to be a show for friends, something for fun, a get-together so I could play whatever I liked. And then it got bigger and bigger.
5. How did you link up with Major Lazer for your show at Paradiso last year? And what do you think about Major Lazer’s wild performance style?
We had dinner before the show. I think they are AMAZING… so much energy. And they are so creative. I had mad fun with the whole crew.
6. Your track with Major Lazer (Bumaye) is huge- what parts of it did you have the most influence on? Are you happy with the way it turned out?
Quite a nice part. I used a sample of Willy Colon, an old Latin Artist, and I developed the track Bumaye. The track was released some time ago with this Dutch artist. Then with FS, I did a re-edit and Diplo liked it. He added the vocal of Busy Signal to it, and there was the magic.
7. What has connecting with Diplo and the Major Lazer crew brought for your career so far?
Besides world attention, also a lot of lessons. Diplo and his crew are very inspiring to me. They stick to what they like and create huge success from it. And that also shows in everything they do. They do what they love, and they rule with that. Huge big up!!
8. What do you think of Major Lazer’s ‘Free The Universe’ album?
The whole album is insane!! It has to score big time!! ‘Get Free’ is a track that I’ve been using a lot for my mixtapes, and also ‘Jah No Partial’, I used it in my after-movies for my “Yours Truly” events. It seems like almost every track on that album is a banger, with hit potential.
9. The video for ‘Watch Out For This (Bumaye)’ was just released last Friday – we figure it’s about to go viral. What was it like shooting in Jamaica? Did you have any free time to explore?
Yes, we stayed there to chill for a while. FS Green, Sef and I got to know the Jamaican culture for a few days – we loved it. So chill, so pure. Also, shooting the video was an insane experience. Jay [Will] is a super cool producer, and the whole crew was super dope to work with.
10. We saw your clip on Vine when you’re in the car listening to Jay-Z… who else are you listening to at the moment? Anyone you’d really like to collab with?
Breach and Dark Sky – The Click is who I’m listening to at the moment. I would love to work with Daft Punk and Armand van Helden.
11. Thanks so much for chatting with us! Is there anything we should look out for from you in the near future?
Oh yes, definitely my follow-up of ‘Watch Out For This’ with my man Sef. Something straight from the Netherlands by “Yours Truly” ;-).
