We recently featured The Golden Pony’s remix of Rudimental ft. MNEK’s “Common Emotion” in our Unwind The Mind weekly playlist, but now they’ve brought us brand new music, once again, cementing their ability to take classics and turn them over into a modern day sound.
They’ve given us everything from 60’s folk rock with their Simon and Garfunkel “Sound of Silence” remix to present day work ups of The Chainsmoker’s “Let you Go”, which reached over 5 million plays on SoundCloud. Pulling inspiration from all different genres is a breath of fresh air when it comes to diversity in electronic music.
Released today on Enormous Tunes, The Golden Pony has graced us with a modern day work up with a new original mix “Don’t Make Me Wait”, a deep house ode to Larry Levan and the NYC Peech Boys. The track is another example of the duo’s talent of bringing deep house club vibes to classics, making listeners want to get up and dance.
RaverRafting was given the opportunity to speak with Timothy and Thomas to ask a few questions about their start in as producers, inspiration behind their music and much, much more.
It’s clear you guys pull inspiration from classics, but what got you into DJing and producing your own music?
Timothy: We both come from a more rock and vocal songwriting background. What we really love about producing with modern technology is that we are able to create sounds that have never been heard before, and use them in original songs. While drum machines and synthesizers have been around for 40 years, the fact that you can make an entire finished song in your bedroom on a laptop is really opening up new ways of creating fresh sounds and ideas.
DJ’ing is a really fun way to see how crowds react to music other than your own!
Thomas: I’m such a club baby, I go out almost every night of the week to hear people spin and absorb new sounds. The history and inclusiveness of dance music culture is really inspiring to me. Production is pretty much the same. The tracks, all of the fantastic producers we love are dropping inform our sound. It feels like a global conversation.
Was Deep House/Disco/Indie always in your sights when you started or did that just kind of happen?
Timothy: We both love so many different genres of music, from rock to hip-hop to world music. We were all over the board when we started, but as of late we’ve been working in the deep/indie/disco genres to make our releases feel more cohesive, but definitely retaining small elements from these other genres that we love.
Thomas: I’m a huge hip-hop fan actually, everything from golden era to the latest trap stuff. But I also grew up listening to a lot of Talking Heads and Bowie, so those art rock vibes are in my head too.
You guys have remixed everything from The Chainsmokers, to Snoop Dog, to Lana Del Ray…How do you choose what you’re going to do next?
Thomas: We’re always just looking songs that really speak to us. We often hear something on our first listen through that becomes part of the concept or hook of the remix.
Tim, you started BangOn NYC, how did that come about?
Timothy: I started BangOn NYC when I moved to NYC 8 years ago to meet other musicians! I literally knew one person when I moved here, and figured it would be a good way to have fun and link with other artists.
Tell me about the inspiration/creation of “Don’t Make Me Wait”
Thomas: We both love classic house, and “Don’t Make Me Wait” is such a storied track, coming out of Larry Levan’s (sadly) short lived supergroup. When we happened across an acapella to the track, we knew we had to try to honor the original track but make a version that fits today’s club sound.
Son’s of Maria have remixed “Don’t Make Me Wait” why did you guys choose to release the remix before the original?
Timothy: No idea, the label did that! Enormous Tunes has been really successful in Europe and on Beatport which will be new territory for us, so we are happy to let them do their thing.
You guys recently had an event (March 26th with N2N). I heard it sold out, tell me more about the event and how it went
Thomas: It was at Hotel Americano in the Meatpacking District of NYC and was a dark fun sweaty time! I think it was well attended because we made N2N send out nudes to everyone to get them to come.
How does it feel to sell out shows and have hundreds, thousands and millions of people listening and loving your work?
Timothy: It feels like summer vacation, an Ice-cream Sunday, and a new Puppy all rolled into one.
Anything exciting coming up next?
Thomas: Yes! We’re hitting the road for a lot of the summer for festival season. We’re really excited for our next California tour which will see us hit Audio in San Francisco and Boogaloo Mountain Jam Festival in Silverado.
Last, question: Any hair care tips on keeping the Fros?
Timothy: Don’t get a real job.
“Don’t Make Me Wait” is available for streaming on Soundcloud and for purchase here on Beatport!
