Coming out of the West Coast Bass scene is the duo of Michael D. Rivera and Troy Prokopowich who compromise The OriGinALz. The two began working together in 2011 and released their first album Get Lucid two short years later. They’ve since released music on the Gravitas label and played fests like Burning Man, Lunar Elevation, The Bounce Festival, and Emissions Festival among others.
We attribute their success to the tasteful way they approach bass music. While some bass artists have the mindset of making the loudest, grimiest sounds that can tend to be a bit abrasive, Michael and Troy focus on the more melodic side of bass music. They contrast floaty synths with deep wubs backed by snappy percussive elements that get inside your headspace and weave around once inside.
The theme of “bass vs. melodic” is ever present on their latest album Intravenous, an eleven track collection featuring Knight Riderz and fellow Gravitas member Digital Connection with remixes by Stylust Beats, LabRat, Bleep Bloop, and Perkulat0r. We begin with “By Neptune” that introduces us to a melodic soundscape and some huge drum hits before launching into a fat, ripply bassline. From there we go onto “Deep Within” a dungeony track that introduces you to the breakdown before oscillating between bleeps and bass. We’re getting deeper into their minds on “Hidden Treasures” with a stringy synth line reminiscent of that classic Glitch Mob sound. “Star Seed” flows with the vision and intentions of the album, but we feel it’s just a teaser for our favorite track, “West Side Comin Thru” ft. Knight Riderz. They combine the thugged out vocal sample with their signature sound that “peaks” the album. Lastly we have “Intravenous” and “Purple Unicorn” that wind down the album utilizing downtempo elements that give the listener closure to what was an epic musical journey. (If you can’t get enough check out the remixes, all done by talented artists who revamp the original vision of the album while injecting their own creativity)
Much love to The OriGinALz and best of luck to them during what we hope will be a busy festival season. Check the album out below and feel free to donate on their bandcamp page!
