It’s every artist’s dream to get a certified Platinum Award from the RIAA and now it’s easier than ever. Last Thursday the group announced that they will be counting music streams towards the gold & platinum status.
Services that will count towards the award:
- MOG
- Muve Music
- Rdio
- Rhapsody
- Slacker
- Spotify
- Xbox Music
- MTV.com (video)
- VEVO (video)
- Yahoo! Music (video)
- YouTube (video)
SoundCloud may have had an incredible month traffic wise, but without being included on this list will make it tough for artist management to justify spending the money and time building on a platform that doesn’t count towards RIAA gold. Also notable exclusions include Pandora, Hypemachine and Grooveshark.
Spin suggests that this may have a devastating affect on hip-hop where most music is streamed through sites like datpiff.com or worldstarhiphop.com.
So how many streams equal a download now?
The magic number is 100.
Seeing how you can buy 4,000,000 youtube views for only $3,000 (for real) we can probably expect to see some more Al Walser’s getting platinum plaques any day now.
