Will.i.am is suing Pharrell Williams over the use of the phrase “I am”. Pharrell set up his “i am OTHER” brand to promote artist individuality online.
So where’s the connection?
Will.i.am is claiming that the phrase “I AM” is “confusingly similar” to his “i.am+” and iPhone camera add-on product. So basically Pharrell’s creative venture is infringing upon poor Will.i.am’s iPhone Camera.
On the other end of the spectrum, Pharrell’s project is described on its website as, “A creative venture and way of life. We are proud to be different and believe that individuality is the new wealth.”
It’s hard to believe that will.i.am would actually bother suing over such a trivial thing especially because they’re both artists. Whatever happened to talking it out?
Pharrell seems to agree as he commented to RollingStone that,
“I am disappointed that Will, a fellow artist, would file a case against me. I am someone who likes to talk things out and, in fact, I attempted to do just that on many occasions. I am surprised in how this is being handled and I am confident that Will’s trademark claims will ultimately be found to be as meritless and ridiculous as I do.”
From stealing Arty & Mat Zo’s “Rebound” to suing Pharrell, it leads us to wonder if there’s anyone worse than will.i.am in music right now?
