Oukast is back after a 6 year hiatus to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, their debut album which was released April 26th, 1994. Coincidentally (or maybe not?) that date happens to fall directly in the middle of Counterpoint Music Festival‘s return to the rolling hills of Georgia, just a few miles outside of the duo’s hometown of Atlanta.
As festival season unfolds, Outkast is stabbing every city (40 stops to be exact) and then they’re heading to that bat cave in A-T-L Georgia where the real madness begins. Even the most humble mumble Outkast fan knows that nothing is more important to this pair than representing their hood and showing love to the ATLiens. That being said, when it comes to the date and location of this performance, it appears the stars have aligned.
In today’s music scene, we see artists come and go. The average lifespan of a music career has dwindled to a few short years and it’s increasingly difficult to grow a strong bond between artist and fan. True artistry is a dying craft in modern music and few musicians today have invested themselves enough to stand out from the others.
It’s one thing to be great at what everyone else is doing. But It’s a completely different level of success when you reinvent what’s being done altogether, making a new reality for everyone from your own dreams. Outkast has always been ahead of the game in their style and ingenuity whether it be in their songs, their shows or their clothes.
“If it wasn’t for us trying to enlighten you all with all sorts of flows and flavors, the game wouldn’t be the same. You gotta’ keep it innovative and new, creative. You know what I’m saying? People don’t wanna hear the same old thing over and over. You gotta come provocative n*gga! Sh*t’s gotta be spine tingling with mad styles and crazy-dangerous bust your sh*t open beats!” – Outkast on Rosa Parks
20 years after their debut and they’re still cooler than a polar bear’s toenails. A lot has changed in the world of music since they redefined southern hip-hop in the 90s but even today their influence can be felt reverberating through every funky beat. As new generations of artists gain popularity referencing their songs, it’s almost as if Outkast, as an entity always has been and always will be.
Sound familiar?
Some festivals may be touting other big name hip-hop acts on their lineup this year as “different” but (truly speaking) few living artists have had as substantial of an impact on rap music than Outkast. So hold up Bonnaroo… I’m really happy for you and Kanye and imma let you finish… but COUNTERPOINT HAS TWO OF THE BEST RAPPERS OF ALL TIME!
And when it comes to performances, this duo is unparalleled. The chemistry between these guys is explosive to say the least. They feed off each other’s energy and compliment each other’s unique style in a way no one else can. Not only are they band-mates but Outkast is also a friendship that’s been developing since before we were born. “It’s him and I, Aquemini.”
To my dungeon family, follow the funk from the skunk and the dank that is crunk in the Dungeon to ATL, home of the pimps and the money makers, Club people* (PG edit), Magic City and them Southern playas.
