In anticipation of his upcoming album, Thomas Gold’s first single of the year, “Better Versions of Myself,” once again shows his agility to continuously reinvent himself. At first listen, you’ll notice the music is more melodic, emotional, and different to what his fans have familiarized themselves with in the past. With that said, we can assure you that it’s a track fans will undoubtedly play on repeat over and over again. This week, we had the opportunity to ask Thomas Gold some questions about his new single, what inspired him to take his music in this entirely different direction, and got a taste of what’s on his horizon for 2017 . Check out the exclusive interview below!
You’ve just released your new single “Better Versions of Myself,” and it’s unlike anything we’ve heard from you before. Can you tell us about the soundscape of this track and what inspired you to produce this new style?
Thomas Gold: Yeah, as you said, ‘Better Versions Of Myself’ is completely different from what I have done before. I wanted to take my production into a new direction, and this time it was not about making a club track but rather a song. The production is inspired quite a lot from the Future Bass genre, with the tempo set at 74/148 bpm, the chord structure and all those little and tiny drum details and gimmicks. I fell in love with Future Bass a while ago and I wanted create something like this myself. The structure and the elements in this production are actually quite simple, and there is not a lot going on, but it is mainly the vocal and the little details which I think make it that special.
When did you initially decide that you wanted to take your music in this new direction?
Thomas Gold: I had the idea of doing something different for a long time already, but when I decided to do my first full album, I wanted to go for a completely fresh approach, music wise. I have been doing club tracks for years now, all set at around 128 bpm, but I had so many ideas for other styles in my head. I just wanted to finally realize some of them. I started working on the album back in January 2016 when I went to Los Angeles for 15 days to do a bunch of vocal writing sessions. And I must say that I am super happy and excited about the way everything went and is still going!
Since the title of the track is ‘Better Versions of Myself,” do you feel that this song and new style of music is, in fact, better than what you’ve previously produced, and would you say it’s a culmination of all the recent experimenting you’ve been doing with your music as of late?
Thomas Gold: I don’t know if “Better Versions Of Myself” is “better” than what I’ve done before. It is just completely different and for me it opens up a whole new universe of production techniques and styles. In fact, I have been experimenting a lot in the past 2 years with new approaches and sounds. For example, I completely
overhauled my audio sample collection, I listened to tons of tracks from all kinds of genres to learn from them, and I tried out new ways of production. So yes, ‘Better Versions Of Myself’ is kind of the result of all this. And it’s just one of the first tracks – there is more fresh stuff to come…
Before the single’s release, did you have any concerns about how your fans would react?
Thomas Gold: Of course you think about your fans’ reactions and how they would like the new sound. There will be people who do not like the new music at all maybe. But I also know that I have a lot of fans who will appreciate the new style. At the end, I had to decide for myself. I wanted to create something which reflects my understanding of music nowadays and what I love. So I got rid of all concerns and I just did what I love to do. When I released “Magic” last year (which also has a different sound from what I used to do and it’s at a slower tempo than my usual productions), I was not sure about the reactions, but now, a few months later, I am getting so much love for the track, it’s incredible! So fingers crossed for “Better Versions Of Myself” 🙂
You’re set to release a new album this Spring. Can you tell us what we can expect to hear, and what other music you have in the works for 2017.
Thomas Gold: You can expect to hear a lot of fresh, new music, all completely new songs and a variety of genres. There is a lot of energetic tracks, but also a bunch of very emotional ones in the album in the album. I am very excited to release it and to see how people will react! I am still finalizing the last few tracks at the moment, but after this, I will be touring a lot with the album. I already have some new ideas for productions, so I will surely get back into the studio after the summer and work on those.
Are there any particular artists or vocalists you’d like to work with that you think would fit your new sound?
Thomas Gold: Right now, I don’t have any particular name in mind. During the album production process, I met so many talented singers and songwriters, which I had not heard of before, and I was surprised at how many great voices are out there! So actually, there was no need for any particular artist (on this album). But maybe for the next album – let’s see…
Now that you’re taking your music in a new direction, will you be saying goodbye to the Progressive/Tech House scene for awhile?
Thomas Gold: Not at all! I grew up with House music and I will always stick to that style. I’m just going different ways right now as I wanted to have a change and realize ideas which I can’t within the House genre. In fact, I already do have some ideas for Tech house / House productions, and I can’t wait to work on those once the album is finished!
You’ve got a seriously dedicated fan base who flock to wherever you go! Where can they expect to see you play this year?
Thomas Gold: I just got back from playing in Bangkok, Taipei and Singapore and I will do a couple of more shows in Asia soon. You can also catch me in Mexico and Brazil in the next few weeks. Then, I will do my big album tour, starting with the Miami Music Week, and then travelling in the US and South America all of April and half of May. After this, I will be on tour all over Europe and Asia for the Summer season.
Are there any upcoming club shows or festivals you’re most excited about?
Thomas Gold: I’m excited to play at Supersonic Festival in India in february! My first time there and I can’t wait!
Lastly, we think your fans deserve to know: You posted a video saying that your New Year’s resolution for 2017 was to drink less coffee and eat more gummy bears. How’s that going so far?
Thomas Gold: Less coffee does not work yet, but I definitely do eat more gummy bears now, and it feels great, yeah!
