The streaming music conversation took a historic turn today with the re-launching of Swedish music streaming company TIDAL. Recently purchased by Jay-Z for 65 million, TIDAL made a massive announcement, with a huge cast of music super stars present, in hopes of “turning the tides” on the way music is consumed by music lovers, the quality of streaming music available, and hints at offering alternative, friendlier sources of revenue to artists.
Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Jack White, Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Chris Martin, Usher, Daft Punk, deadmau5, Calvin Harris Jay-Z and more came together in-person and online to back TIDAL as the future. The 18-minute press conference video was released today, which states the new platform is artists-owned, will feature exclusive experiences, will connect artists and fans in greater ways, is consumer-friendly, sustainable, and will offer basic things like allowing music to be saved on your phone for 24/7 access.

The video goes on to show clips of TIDAL on a mobile device, displaying the smooth design and functionality in the background, while superstars sign on to TIDAL at the forefront.
With so many on board and an insane amount of hype smothering the internet about the re-launched platform, it’s easy to image TIDAL replacing other services like Spotify, but I can’t help but remain skeptical at how well the company can balance being artist and user-friendly while maintaining excepted returns.
What do you think, will TIDAL be a win-win streaming solution to end all arguments or celebrity endorsed gimmick that comes at a premium price?
