In the midst of lockdown, Seattle-based powerhouse Slow Shudder experienced unusually vivid daily dreams. These dreams sparked introspection about past romantic relationships that never felt fully resolved. “I recognized that there were a lot of unprocessed emotions there, which I’d compartmentalized over the years instead of fully accepting and feeling,” Slow Shudder explained in a press statement. “I haven’t had much time in my adult life to take a deep look at so many of my ‘ghosts.'”
Approaching these dreams head on, Slow Shudder created her latest single, an alt/future pop wonder, “Time Now for Ghosts.” While the solo artist is an alumna of bitbird, Moving Castle, Next Wave / Ultra Music, and various other impressive labels, she is taking this tune independent. The title “Time Now for Ghosts” derives from 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami, which explores the concept of parallel realities. In particular, the title made her think of quantum entanglement, described by Einstein as “spooky action at a distance.”
Slow Shudder’s lyricism explores the concept of entanglement within the framework of relationships and memory. They describe feeling two places at once: present with someone physically, yet emotionally distanced and lost in thought. When the second verse enters, these are switched as there is physical distance, yet increased emotional connection.
Slow Shudder’s melodious vocals seamlessly pair with her sweeping synth layers and technical prowess. The emotive single lives between contemplative and blissful soundscapes as energetic percussive patterns evoke euphoria from listeners.
