Late last night Dave Tipper took to the Tipper Community on Facebook to announce that his EP Fathoms would be dropping later that night. Although fans fought sleep and possibly succeeded, most woke up this morning with a “Christmas as a kid” sort of feeling knowing that there was new Tipper to be greet their ears.
First we think it appropriate to delve into the meaning of the name, Fathoms. Fathom has two definitions, to penetrate to the truth of, and to measure the depth of by means of a sounding line; sound. It is also a unit of measurement used nautically, that is, in water. To us the name carries a significance as its reflected in the theme of the album; a collection of dark, deep, almost aqueous sounds assembled into songs and as a bigger picture, the album. We’ll let you ponder on the rest of what Dave might have meant when he was naming the EP.
We usually do album breakdowns but for this album, and for Tipper, we want you to go into this with only the notions that we described in the previous paragraph. We’re loving every song but especially “Ambergris” and “Deep Sixing” (fun fact a Fathom is generally six feet). Get into it below.
While gauging fans reactions we came across some hilarious and deep reviews from some of Tipper’s biggest fans in the Facebook group. Check out our favorites below.
