Dubstep originated from South London, England around the late 1990s and combined elements of drum & bass, two-step garage, jungle, and for many beginners – hip hop and rap. A collection of music producers took this unique sound and created a phenomenon. They forged a path for artists to stray away from “big room sound” and create something more noticeable and distinct. The genre was/still is a huge success in the United Kingdom. In 2011, Skrillex became the poster boy for dubstep and created an addiction in the United States. Since then, so many artists have emerged and took the genre from “London Underground” to megastructures such as Basscon & the Bass Pod stages at Electric Daisy Carnival.
Today, a young artist called T-Mass produces melodies mixed with hard-hitting bass for the Bay Area in California. His dedication has earned him coveted spots playing at Insomniac’s Beyond Wonderland and Cloud10 Event’s Wompoween. We were able to meet with Thomas Allen, better known as T-Mass, before his opening set for Seven Lions during the 2014 Worlds Apart Tour in Milwaukee, WI. We wanted to find out who influenced his ‘wub’ and passion for producing dance music.

I was picking songs from that torrent because I really didn’t know much about the genre at the time. I saw the Seven Lions remix and it blew my mind completely. Since then, it’s been this struggle of trying to recreate some of those stylistic choices with my own adaptation on it. I use him as a role model for sound production. ”
