Dallas was definitely the spot to be Tuesday night, Tommy Trash and Wolfgang Gartner threw down at the Granada Theater after their back to back performance at Something Wicked on Saturday. They returned once again to give fans that mid-week push to coast all the way through the week. We were able to check this event out, and see what all the hype was about these “Hounds of Hell”.
The Venue
The Granada Theater in Dallas, TX has one of the smartest set-ups I have ever seen. It is has one main dance floor, but with small barriers between each level. So while it has a theater style layout with the back areas elevated, because of the barriers, no one is able to crowd their way to the front. If someone wants to move up, they have to walk out into the aisle and into another level. Also, the barriers serve as a nice place to put stuff down, lean against, and even sit on. An excellent way to keep crowds under control, and to keep people evenly spread out in each area.
However, the sound system in the theater is definitely not tuned to accentuate electronic music with its different layers of vocals, instruments, and bass. The sounds were turned up loud enough, but it was unclear and at times extremely difficult to differentiate the vocals from the rest of the background music. A little disappointing, because several epic transitions went fairly unnoticed due to the lack of clear sound in the venue.
Tommy Trash
If someone told me they had gone to a Tommy Trash show and hadn’t completely lost their minds, I wouldn’t believe it in a million years. Not only does he bring the energy and hype by throwing his long hair all around during his set; he plays a dynamic mixture of his favorite hits and unbelievable house tunes. If you are a regular Tommy Trash fan, you’ll know that there are a few songs that he always includes in his sets. Like his remixes of Steve Aoki’s “Ladi Dadi” and Deadmau5’s “The Veldt”.
During his set, it was pretty easy to differentiate between the different tracks he played. He played a wide variety of his own remixes, paired with a couple of hits like Showtek’s “Booyah”, but it wasn’t a set that was entirely dedicated to playing the “Beatport Top 40”. He played a variety of both new and old songs, and kept the crowd rocking all the way through. When Tommy Trash played his huge hit, “Reload” the beauty and awe of the moment was forever implanted in the memory of those in attendance. Even though we had just caught him on Saturday at Something Wicked, he still played a completely different set than we had heard just 3 days prior.
Wolfgang Gartner
He came out like the true symphonic conductor of bringing the house down . The tracks he played were so diverse and unexpected, and his transitions were phenomenally seamless. The intense screens paired with the methodical music made Wolfgang Gartner look like he was floating through a haunted house. He played such a dynamic range of tracks such as his mashup of Basement Jaxx’s “Where’s Your Head At?” and his remix of Tiesto’s classic “I Will Be Here”. It was really a beautiful moment, and he made the fans go nuts with his expert mixing. His show was really a unique experience, and fans that have checked out the Hounds of Hell tour will agree.
The Most Memorable Moment
As soon as Wolfgang Gartner finished out his last song, the crowd started chanting, “Encore! Encore!”. Then, Wolfgang comes back on the stage and calls for Tommy Trash to join him. Seeing the two of them on stage together, laughing and having a good time while playing some of the sickest tunes my ears have ever heard, was an unbelievable memory. They closed out with their collaboration track “Hounds of Hell” and the crowd absolutely lost their minds. Good vibes spread all throughout the Granada Theater that evening,
