Not long ago, Too Many Zooz teamed up with KDA, Ministry of Sound and Jess Glynne to create a track that became the official anthem for Pride 2018, “so real” (warriors) . After the huge success of the track, we sat down with Matt of Too Many Zooz to have a chat about the production, the trio’s past and future. Here’s what we found out.
RaverRafting: Hi, guys! We’re glad to have you! Let’s jump right into it and let me ask you, how did “Warriors” come to life?
Too Many Zooz: We were out in San Francisco working on the album.. were all big basketball fans, and this was during the end of the 2015-16 season when GSW was just insane. Anyway, it was the night of Kobe’s last 60+ point game, and game 73 (when GSW famously beat MJ and 95-96 bulls best regular season record). We were just sitting in the studio, watching the pre-game, starting joking around like “man what if we just blew off this session and went to the game”.. 5 minutes later we had 3 tickets and were on our way to Oracle to watch game 73. Left Oracle, went back to the studio, and cut “warriors”.
RR: The track became the official song of Gay Pride 2018. How do you feel about this outcome?
TMZ: Excellent. It’s always awesome to see our music make its way into new markets and discovered by fans we never had before, so we were nothing but thrilled to hear that.
RR: Working with KDA and Jess Glynne must have felt amazing. How did you connect and when did you begin working together?
TMZ: A lot of that was through ministry of sound. Us and KDA just kind of naturally connected musically.. he really dug the record, and just did his thing and had fun with it. Getting jess on it was definitely a bit of hoops and ladders but the same thing… we submitted the joint, she laid down vox in a day or 2. Jess naturally knew what to do and it just worked. Sometimes records just work.
RR: Now let’s get to know you guys better. Tell us, when did your musical path begin to take shape?
TMZ: We all been playing music and performing for a long time so it’s quite difficult to speak on the other fella’s musical path, and it would take far too long to elaborate on mine. However, as a group, we started playing together maybe 5 or 6 years ago now. Down in the train stations in NYC, every day for a few years. Through the power of the internet, hard work, and a few other things, now we’re here.
RR: Out of everything that you’ve accomplished (and the list isn’t short) what is the thing you proud yourself on the most?
TMZ: Honestly I don’t know. I don’t really like thinking about the past. I’m much more interested In what the future holds for us, both as too many zooz, but also as individuals.
RR: What’s next for you?
TMZ: Man there’s always a load of shit on the horizon for us. We’re pretty much always touring, and recording. A lot of it, I can’t really touch on at this exact moment. Sitting on tons of music and videos and other content. Waiting for the right moment to strike.
RR: If you could tell your fans anything, what would you say?
TMZ: Always be yourself and never be afraid to be honest. No one can condemn you for your truths.
