WRR has featured several articles mentioning how EDM is shifting gears in 2014: What was popular in 2012 was obviously different than 2013; but the change happening in 2014 is vastly different than anything heard since the turn of the decade. To make matters more confusing, these sounds don’t have a widely accepted name: some tracks are better classified as ‘chill trap’ while others may lean more toward the ‘new wave/indie’ side; there can be lots of overlap. To me, it’s all a big family of innovative music.
To help somewhat solidify the awesomeness that is happening this year, here’s a list of the top 6 tracks that have us thrilled about where ‘EDM’ is going. Each song encompasses innovation and excitement within each note and will undoubtedly spice up your musical life.
6. Coldplay – Trouble (Royal Refix)
Royals “Trouble” remix features two specific things that I can’t get enough of: groovy, almost jazzy melodies and harmonizing, slurred vocal parts. Both have been featured in electronic music in past years, but there’s something craveable about combining the two.

5. Melanie Martinez – Dollhouse (Jai Wolf Remix)
Jai Wolf mixes what could’ve been a massive progressive melody into a smooth ride with highly detailed percussion sections and sustained chords. The simplicity Jai Wolf adds to “Dollhouse” shows that building a huge new world around an original isn’t always the best way to go.
4. Yung Wall Street – Onesie
“Onesie” is like Flume, Kid Kamillion, and Cashmere Cat all rolled up into one. The vibe starts off energetic, but takes a deep r&b turn toward the middle of the track. Yung Wall Street has an appreciable collection of Soundcloud tracks all showing off his eclectic style.
3. Alison Wonderland – I Want U (GANZ Flip)
If you liked “Onesie” then you’ll love “I Want You (GANZ Flip,)” both tracks carry similar elements: soulful vocal parts, killer drum work, and producers who aren’t afraid to push the envelope.
2. Louis The Child – Nothing Is Real (feat. Soifer)
What’s not to love about Louis? Louis the Child is one of the most dynamic groups of the six. The single “Nothing Is Real,” hits you with a electrifying dose of pure joy, but is very different from alot of what LTC puts out there. Either way, breaking genre barriers and being different proves to be the best move in the long run.

1. Miguel – Do You… (Cashmere Cat Remix)
This remix inspired the article idea, Cashmere Cat brings together all the best new elements the world is pumped about in 2014 into one remix. Simply put, you have to experience this track first hand – an all-around game-changing rework.
