When New Year’s 2013 first arrived, my interest in Dance podcasts and radio shows was nearly non-existent. Thanks to these five shows, the way I discover, understand, and enjoy EDM has been completely transformed. Deciding which shows would make this list was easy, but selecting the order was absolutely torturing. Finally, I decided the order based on analysis of specific aesthetics like: intros and monologs, set style, song choice, and how each show differentiated itself.
#5 Laidback Luke: Mixmash Radio
While starting Mixmash Radio was a smart idea for Laidback Luke, it lacks dynamism among other flaws: His voice isn’t particularly radio-friendly and the monolog is just so-so, but he makes up for it with beautiful transitions and great song choices. If you’re a die-hard fan of the Dutch-DJ scene, you will easily fall in love with Luke’s show.
#4 Spinnin’ Records: Spinnin’ Sessions
From big-names to up-and-comers, Spinnin’ Sessions features a huge variety of DJs with a suave radio show host. Every set is filled with new sounds from all types of labels, not just Spinnin’ Records. Their diverse catalog of mixes could easily be labeled as an “essential guide for EDM newbies.”
#3 Borgeous: House of Borgeous
Even though he is only one show deep, Borgeous’s radio show is one of the best Big-Room shows of 2013. As the co-creator of the mega-hit “Tsunami,” Borgeous knows how to make Big-Room music appealing to even the most jaded critics. By selecting Big-Room sounds that contain little repetition and unoriginality, (two unfortunate, but common annoyances of the genre,) Borgeous proves that Big-Room can maintain it’s overwhelming power and simultaneously provide a smooth flow, great melody, and solid catchiness.
#2 Carnage: Incredible
Carnage is incredible. In 2013, he played the biggest festivals, shook the foundation of how genres should be produced, and catapulted an entire EDM sub-genre into the mainstream, with one remix. When SiriusXM announced his new show, I knew this would be the place where Carnage is king and anything goes. After the premiere, “Carnage presents: Incredible” crushed expectations: featuring huge sets, huge guests, and gave “festival music” a whole new meaning.
#1 Cash Cash: Royalty Radio
Each Royalty Radio episode is flawless. From the moment you click play, stimulating sound effects instantly and completely capture your attention. Jean Paul Makhlouf’s made-for-radio voice delivers a dirty, hilarious, exciting, and surprising monolog that genuinely expresses the love Cash Cash has for their music and fans. In each episode, the trio experiment with different genres and vibes, but never divert too far from their electro-pop core, forming a satisfying balance of experimentation and familiarity.
