Churches, synagogues, and mosques. The three major religions of the world have their houses to pray in, and for our fellow Washington, DC area trap fans, we gather at the Blind Whino to pray alike, in what is rightly called Trapitol Hill.
Set in a DC Historic landmark baptist church that was vacant for over 20 years, this building was taken over and to be revitalized by the Art Whino Gallery. Commissioned by HENSE, an Atlanta-based artist, the request was to do a full wrap-around exterior mural. Additionally, curated by the Australian-based House of Meggs, the inside venue was given a full wrap-around interior mural as well. The results are spectacular, and it’s the perfect place to dance like you are in another reality.
Attached to the venue there was an art gallery that provided art from local artists which could be purchased on the spot, or if you got you were focused on getting our groove on, could be picked up later. The variations in paintings fit in perfectly with the eclectic and unique vibe of the night.
The upper house of trap prayer was… just look….
Exposed brick, stained glass, with wolves, werewolves, and dogs? A crowd bursting with energy and drenched in sweat surrounded the stage beaming with lights and lasers.
The basement level, although not as big, had no less energy than the aforementioned upstairs. A canopy of leaves and branches along with vendors, food, and drink to keep you moving for all five hours were housed in this area.
DJs and producers that owned the night included DJ Pyrite, Kidd Marvel, Chooky, Bassdread, Throdown, Slugworth (event organizer), Choppy Oppy, Bortz, RaceCarBed, High Klassified, and ETC(!) ETC(!). Every single artist had the crowd moving, and from the eyes of WRR, was an absolute and complete success. In honor of the event, Choppy Oppy came up with a bass-infused funky shoutout to Biggie that you can check out and download for free below.
As EDM continues to grow more and more, it will be the smaller and unique encounters with artists that fans will remember. From the writers here at WRR, we will always remember Trapitol Hill 2014, and look for many more incredible organized events from Slugworth.
