If you have to pick one up and coming jamtronica band to keep you eye on in 2015, make it these guys. You probably recognize David Embry, Jeff Peterson, and Nicholas Gerlach as the guys from Cosby Sweater, sharing the stage with industry heavyweights including Pretty Lights, the Disco Biscuits, and Umphrey’s McGee or on the lineup of your favorite fest.
A clever band name gone wrong, beyond any measures of their control, the trio was forced to roll with the punches, taking the opportunity to up their game, and revamp as Turbo Suit.
In this exclusive interview Nick, tenor saxophone and EWI aficionado of the band, discusses the name change, the upcoming release of their new album, Out Here, and even more big plans for 2015.
We can take a wild guess, but how to the decision to change the band’s name from Cosby Sweater to Turbo Suit come to fruition?
The connotations surrounding the name just became way too negative for us to carry on using that name. It’s a decision that we came to as a group because of the circumstances. Rape and rape culture is not something that we, or any other band, want to be associated with at all.
What are some challenges you’ve had to overcome due to the identity change? On the flip side, what are some positive effects of the revamp?
Honestly, has only been a month since the name change. So far the crowds at shows have been great and people still seem to enjoy our music which is the most important part of being a band. I think we did a good enough job of announcing and explaining the name change that we avoided any real negative effects. There are a few people who still don’t understand why we changed our name. But, I’m not sure what more we can tell them. I’m sure that they will come around and realize why we made the decision.
The Turbo Suit remix game is strong! What has been your favorite creation so far and what plans do you have in the works for future remixes?
I think my favorite remixes to play are “Cocaine Blues” and “Another Brick in the Wall”. They are both funky and give me the chance to explore the tune live on my saxophone. We don’t have any remixes planned for release coming up soon, but that’s only because we are releasing our new album “Out Here” next month! I’m sure there will be plenty of fresh remixes coming through the pipeline after that.
Can you tell us about your most memorable live performance?
I think our most memorable live performance so far was playing Umphrey’s McGee’s set break at Electric Forest last year. They are a band that we have always looked up to as role models in the business and it was an honor that they let us play in front of a huge crowd that they had drawn at such an important festival.
What other artists are you most excited to be performing at AURA this year?
We’re pretty big fans of the Disco Biscuits so we are all excited to see them the day after we play. I’m personally excited that the Shady Horns are artists in residence. They’re a great horn section and can’t wait to see them thrown into some interesting situations.
What are goals do you guys have as a band for 2015?
In 2015, we plan to release “Out Here” to masses. Our goal is to have this album take us to another level in our fans and potential fans’ eyes. It represents a total shift in our sound to a more polished, professional, and bigger sound. After that we just plan to tour as hard as possible to spread the word and raise our profile. So far it is shaping up to be a really fun year and it’s only February.
Out Here featuring guest appearances by Zion I, ProbCause, Joel Cummins, Jake Cinninger & Andy Farag of Umphrey’s McGee, and many more will be available on iTunes March 3.
