October 21st marks event hosting company Dial It In debut on the West Coast with rising superstars Two Friends as the headlining act. Two Friends have been making waves in the dance world cementing their fun pop infused House sound. Recent releases include the hit track “While We’re Dreaming” and a remix to The Chainsmokers’ “Break Up Every Night”. We got a chance to speak with the artists behind Two Friends, Eli Sone and Matt Harper, and took a look into what made them who they are today and the journey these LA natives took. Check out the full interview below.
RR: You guys are just finishing up your “While We’re Dreaming” Tour! How has the experience been?
Two Friends: It’s been amazing. We love traveling to new cities to perform and meet new people. It’s a really special feeling seeing so many people sing along to our songs and connect with the music so strongly. Don’t get me wrong, we do love locking ourselves in our basement studio and working all day on music, but when you’re able to go from hearing the new music you’re working on so many thousands of times in the studio and focusing on every little detail, to finally playing it to crowds for the first time, it can be surreal.
RR: Any crazy tour stories?
Two Friends: Playing a 5AM set at a night-club/strip-club combo place in Miami is always a good time. Not even ashamed to admit that it wasn’t a late-night set for us, it was an early-morning set haha. We went to sleep at like 10PM, woke up at 4, and started off the day right.
RR: We’re all really excited for you to crush the stage with Dial It In’s first West Coast appearance. How did you connect with Dial It In? Any surprise tracks planned for your set?
Two Friends: So excited for this one- was stoked when this opportunity with Dial It In was presented. We grew up in LA (and we still live here now) so it’s always special playing here- nothing better than being able to have all our friends and family join us and get to see us do what we love. In terms of the show, get ready for a ton of Two Friends music, some fun bootlegs and edits, a lot of feel-good vibes, and overall just a night full of energy.
RR: Dial It In has a pretty awesome vehicle on their social media, did you guys get a chance to drive that around?
Two Friends: Ahh unfortunately we have not haha. Maybe on Saturday!
RR: Your careers started during your senior year in high school, did this stem from a major case of senoiritis?
Two Friends: Honestly, yes. It was the very end of high school, so we were done with all the college applications, we had way less homework, we knew we weren’t continuing sports in college, so we kinda were just like ‘Hey, making music together could be something fun to mess around with, let’s give it a shot and see what happens.’ We loved it so much that it quickly went from just ‘messing around’ to taking it very seriously, but it’s still crazy to us that this turned into our careers and has taken us all over the globe. We try to never take that for granted, and work as hard as we can to take advantage of the opportunity we have in front of us.
RR: Be honest, were you good students?!
Two Friends: Yes! Especially in high school. In college, we had this newfound passion for music which we wanted to spend a ton of time on obviously, so our grades slipped a tiny bit, but if you ask our moms I bet they’ll say we’re good students, and moms know best.
RR: Was music always the plan or did you both have something else in mind as a career before this?
Two Friends: We always wanted music to be the plan but it wasn’t until around halfway through college that we realized, wow we actually have a chance to pursue this for real. Things were falling into place that could help show our parents and friends and teachers that this wasn’t just a shot in the dark, but that we had some good momentum and we had good discipline. To be honest, we didn’t really ever have full backup plans but it maybe it would’ve been some type of entrepreneurial business thing, or maybe being NBA players.
RR: Your most recent track “While We’re Dreaming” has a really amazing jump and pop to it, how did you guys establish this type of sound in your music?
Two Friends: Thank you! I think that’s the goal with all the music we’ve been making recently – songs that are fun and get you dancing and moving, but also hopefully resonate with you on a more emotional level at the same time. The sound and style we’ve been developing is kind of a melting pot of a lot of different elements and influences- whether from dance music, from pop, even from alternative rock or hip-hop. “While We’re Dreaming” is one that took a few re-imaginations to get it right, but we’re super happy to share it with everyone and have been humbled by all the love so far.
RR: Who would you each say is your top three musical influences?
Matt: Blink-182, Bon Jovi, Death Cab For Cutie
Eli: Blink-182, Eminem, Avicii
RR: With 2017 coming to a close, what can your fans look forward to in 2018? Any big releases or projects in the pipeline?
Two Friends: It’s definitely an exciting time- we’ve been writing and working on a whole boatload of fun stuff, and we cannot wait to share it all with everyone. Doing a fun little remix next week, then we got our next single coming in the middle of November (which we are insanely stoked for), and then a TON of more music in the pipeline. And on the touring side, we’re also very pumped for some of the upcoming shows in some new cities. 2017 has already been an amazing year, and we’re excited to keep all the momentum going into the new year and beyond.
