No, this is not a playlist to inspire a gym tan laundry routine, attract “guidettes,” or fist pump to. Jersey Club, or Brick City Club, is a style of electronic music derived from and largely inspired by Baltimore Club music of the 1980s. It began in Newark, a city in New Jersey, where DJ Tim Dolla, Mike V, R3LL, DJ Black Mic and DJ Tim Tameil of the “Brick Bandits Crew” pioneered the bouncy sound.
Utilizing a 4/4 time signature, choppy samples, and triplet kick patters, Jersey Club is usually around 140 bpm. In 2006, DJ Tameil said this about Jersey compared to Baltimore Club music: “Our styles are real similar but the difference with Baltimore Club music is they like a lot of horns, while we use harder kicks and chop the samples up a lot more.”
DJ Sliiink, DJ Tray, Nadus, DJ Lilman, DJ Frosty, DJ Jayhood, Boogie Man, DJ Taj, and DJ Fade are all noteable producers in the genre. More recently, we’ve seen great work from Cashmere Cat, Trippy Turtle, Ryan Hemsworth, Wave Racer, and Hoodboi.
