I say this alot, but the fusion of genres thing is really incredible, it’s a non-stop intertwined evolution that seems to increase in speed over time, as long as a 24/7 playground is available. Most of the tunes below are hybrids, taking bits and pieces from sub-genres like future house, future bass, chill trap, Miami bass, and more. This week I focused on more up-and-comers just because. Here’s to evolution.
The Phat Lady Sings – Not Letting Go
I love this sound. It’s truly the specific instrument’s use that crafts “Not Letting Go,” giving it flavor. The vocal delivers such a pure, complimentary mood to the overall atmosphere that deep house delivers. “Not Letting Go” is cool, sophisticated, and hooks you in early.
DUX – Future f. Stan Carrizosa
DUX has yet to reach my radar, but I am glad he did. “Future f. Stan Carrizosa” is an anytime song that will cheer you up no matter age or background. “Future f. Stan Carrizosa” has a light disco house percussion backdrop and an electronica grace that glides through strong vocals, funky basslines, and a cloud of ambientness. Be warmed, this one’s hard to put down.
Sebastian Carter – Shallow Waters
Sebastian Carter highlights an area of music that can’t be missed out on. “Shallow Waters” is all it’s own, very ambient, and is blessed with a host of real life sounds that gives “Shallow Waters” unique life. With influences of Bonobo, Four Tet, Odesza and Maribou State, the tune transforms, layer by layer, as the song progresses, conveying an imaginary visual as if Sebastian Carter was taking you on a dream trip.
Popeska – Take You Up On That Ft. ACES
“Take You Up On That Ft. ACES” combines Porter Robinson-like sounds, uplifting video game aesthetics, and a layer of chill trap to make a pleasing organic original. Popeska’s personal note on this one “Hey @theseACES sang on one of my songs in a hotel room in Colombia and she’s dope and it’s all about life and stuff and it’s sparkly and I hope you like it!” It’s amazing how small, random, personal moments can turn into something grand, this tune embodies that theme.
Mwansa – “10 Pounds”
The vocals on Mwansa’s “10 Pounds” are easily one of the most ambitious I’ve heard all year. I don’t know why this track has so few plays because it’s an undiscovered gem to say the least. “10 Pounds” has dozens of dope musical elements within that make it hyper-infectious. From tempo, to melody, arrangement, mastering, and beyond. Mwansa is hot.
Fitz and the Tantrums – HandClap (Myles Travitz Remix)
Myles Travitz has been in the game for some time time now, and knows how to get the room feeling rambunctious. Myles was approached to do the remix he “thought it would be cool to re-imagine it with a blues feel [and] the rolling bass guitar, syncopated brass and synth that just absolutely wails on top!” Without a doubt the combination worked, this remix is catchy similar to the way Pierce Fulton’s new EP is; kickass and feel-good. Myles Travitz’s path is looking bright in 2016.
