Producer and song writer Nick Kaelar aka Varien has been making music headlines in recent months through his high profile releases and ever evolving style. One of his most recent tracks was featured in Scarlett Johansson’s sci-fi thriller, Ghost in a Shell. The track catered to more techno which only furthers the case that Kaelar can produce anything he puts his mind to. We knew after a release of that magnitude it would only be a matter of time before Varien struck again. And that he did.
Varien’s latest creation, “Mutiny” sounds like it could have belonged in the soundtrack to Tron: Legacy. Mind you, that was the soundtrack famously produced by none other than French legends, Daft Punk. Varien swiftly fuses together synthwave with EDM in order to create a genre blending track that we couldn’t be more in love with. The retro style of synthwave is heavily accented in the track and Varien puts a 21st century spin on a genre influenced in the 1980’s-1990’s by video games and movie soundtracks. As we know from his previous productions, Varien is no novice to soundtracks having produced music for movies like Ghost in a Shell, Walking Dead, Furious 7, and 300: Rise of an Empire. Here’s what Varien had to say about his latest production.
Going into ‘Mutiny,’ I wanted to blend synthwave with EDM in a very tasteful way. I wanted to have the colour and feeling you would get from a great synthwave/outrun type track, but something that was dancefloor and DJ-ready. I definitely feel I accomplished this and am absolutely excited to share it with the world. This is one of my first experiments with combining new and exciting ideas like synthwave, vaporwave, witch house, etc. into an understandable format – and I hope to please both the underground that gave birth to these incredible genres and the more casual listeners who love a fresh style.” – Nick Kaelar a.k.a.
