Not long ago we released an article on the electronic Japanese anime artist Koinu. Every image of the Koinu project is paired with Japanese anime and has taken off since the launch nearly six months ago. The man behind Koinu is Nick Pittsinger, aka Varien. Although his Koinu project has taken off, Nick promised to continue releasing content under Varien as well. Just yesterday, Varien announced some exciting news via his Facebook page. In addition to a brand new track, we see a fresh logo and a hint at a forthcoming EP to come very soon. Marking a new chapter for Varien, a dark and mystical logo accompanied by a raven and a gritty warrior have been updated on Facebook and Soundcloud. The change appears to hint at a new direction for Varien through a fusion of hard rock and metal with Varien’s well known electronic roots.
Accompanying the release of his logo comes,”My Prayers Have Become Ghosts” which is the first single off a forthcoming EP. The latest single displays another side of Varien not often seen with his euphoric and bliss releases. The track is dark and forbidding yet perfectly captivates an electro-rock sound ultimately placing the cross genre song in its own unique category. Varien proceeded to hint on Facebook that his newest EP would be leaning more towards a metal/heavy rock sound. A fusing of genres has been long overdue in the electronic scene and we’re glad to see artists willing to push their creative boundaries.
Perhaps one day we’ll find festivals containing certain artists that can cater to all different genres and tastes of music through one united and blended set. Until then, give Varien’s latest single a listen and keep an eye out for his soon to come EP!
