Amongst the phase 1 performers announced to play on the main stage of VELD Music Festival this year, Nom De Strip is one artist that festival-goers should most definitely not want to miss. While still receiving lauds for bringing an underground vibe to today’s dance music scene, Chris Elliot (the proprietor of the Nom De Strip alias) has been highly acclaimed by several noteworthy, and iconic DJs and producers, and has risen up as an increasingly prominent figure in the industry over the past few years. Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, Chris revealed in an interview with EDMsauce that he came up with his francophone pseudonym by browsing through UrbanDictionary.com:
“I always find it difficult to name songs and especially come up with a phony alias for myself. We were struggling, I went on there and had a look around. That was one of the things that I saw which I thought would suit me quite well because all it means is your porn name or your stripper name. So it’s still kind of ambiguous…I figured the music fit that name and it kind of stuck.”
Some electronic music fans may remember Chris from back in the day by the name of “Stupid Fresh”, under which he gained a fair bit of popularity until launching his solo endeavour, Nom De Strip, in 2009. Since then, Chris has been creating music that has pushed and stretched the limits of the genre, thus bringing a dose of ingenuity and originality to the scene. Clearly choosing innovation over ‘playing it safe’ with his music, it was no surprise when Nom De Strip was picked up by Deadmau5′ reputed label, Mau5trap. Shortly after, he released a plethora of tracks on the prestigious label, including one of my personal favourites; his remix of Deadmau5 and Wolfgang Gartner’s “Channel 42”.
He also went on to released a two volume EP on Mau5trap, entitled “Clouds”, which further solidified his spot as one of the most noteworthy rising producers in the industry.
Since then, Nom De Strip hasn’t shown the slightest sign of slowing down, having released a slew of original tracks, as well as remixes, that tastefully exhibit his signature style, as well as clearly demonstrate his proficiency with production. A few months ago he released an electrifying remix of Oliver’s “Control” on Fool’s Gold Records, followed a few weeks later by his catchy tune “I Can’t Believe”, which has dominated dance floors since its release, having almost immediately become a fan favourite.
