It’s festival season. Coachella, Ultra, EDC NY, CounterPoint, Mysteryland USA, and many others have come and gone. There will be afterparties. So many afterparties. As with festivals, you will always have those few performances that will make a mark. Performances that will need but a little trigger of sound or light and you will be instantly transported back to a time which you will never forget. That was our night at the amazing Verboten, as Gov. Ball After Dark and mau5trap teamed up to bring Mir Omar, ATTLAS, Matt Lange, and THE mau5, deadmau5.
With tickets selling out online at lightning speed and the chance for tickets at the door, it was a slew of people coming straight from Governor’s Ball anxiously awaiting to get inside.
Once the doors were open, backpacks and camelbaks checked at the front, earplugs in, brew in tow, everyone was ready to go. To get the night started, previously unannounced Mir Omar was a pleasant surprise to get the night started. With a blend of house, electronica, and trance, it was the perfect emotionally mixed tempo to get the night started.
The next artist you may have heard of as deadmau5’s protege or apprentice. Whatever you want to call him, Jeff Hartford, aka ATTLAS knows hows to play the crowd like a warm hug. Playing off of songs not only from his recently released EP Siren, but also some other chill and ambient house mixed in with more trance-like elements, Jeff had Verboten’s walls going off in visuals that had to be experienced to be truly understood. Everywhere you looked, a liquid and fluidity flow to visuals, sound, and of course, the fans.
And then we came to l’acte principal. Founder of mau5trap record label, and the mau5 of all mau5ez, deadmau5. Slowy making his way onto stage, we knew that Joel had premiered a new stage a few short hours before at Gov Ball along with a set infused with a mix of his own tracks along with some other upbeat progressive hits. But we knew to expect something far different here. With Verboten’s immense disco ball looming overhead flashing dimly and a slow minimal techno synth was building, we knew that we were in for something far different.
For the next two hours, we were granted a mix of progressive hits such as “Phantoms Can’t Hang” along with die-hard deadmau5 fan favorites such as the dark and complicated “Cthulhu Sleeps” that had fans bobbing up and down with their mau5 heads.
Towards the end of the set, deadmau5 showcase his dominant synths once again kicking up the tempo with “My Pet Coelacanth” making the dance flow go wild with Verboten visuals making the movie Gravity seem like a joke.
And last but far not the least, deadmau5 jumped onto the deck to thank the crowd while putting on the fan favorite and classic “Strobe“. With a slow and emotional build as Joel jumped up to thank the crowd, it was ten minutes of perfection to end the set.
When deadmau5 was done, the show was far from over. No stranger to mau5trap records, Matt Lange appeared to showcase his ability to turn on a dime between progressive, deep, and techno for two hours. Just because it’s 3am doesn’t mean it’s time to turn down, and Matt proved it.
Mixing in the progressive gem “Staccato” to the complex techno drum-infused “Inorganism“, nobody wanted to leave when the sun came rising at 5am.
You could say that seven hours of music is enough, but with an impeccable venue like Verboten mixed with the skills of four amazing DJs/producers, it’s never enough.
If you have the chance, go and see any and/or all of the artists above, because you won’t be disappointed. If you get to see these artists at Verboten, even better. From check-in, to visuals, lights, drinks, and more, it was a smooth and great experience. Check out the full schedule of their upcoming artists here.
