Tomorrow, Verve Music Group will release their “The First Ladies” remix album featuring on of the best courted artist lists I’ve seen. RAC, Kaskade, Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, Flume, Zeds Dead, C2C, Maya Jane Coles, TokiMonsta and more. Whoever works for Verve and curated this deserves a raise and a drink on us.
We’ve heard the Nina Simone remixes from Bassnectar, PL and Zeds Dead over the last month or so and they’ve been true indicators that edm can honestly reincarnate the soul of music’s past. Nina Simone is synonymous with soul, and Derek Vincent Smith initially turned down the offer to take part until Verve presented him with a chance to remix the late Goddess of Soul.
“The thing with Nina is that every song I listen to of hers is mind-blowing. They all manage to hit me in that same place, whether it’s about women’s rights or love or love gone bad or politics. She’s one of those rare, rare artists that are able to do that.” – Derek Vincent Smith via USA Today
