Born straight in the heart of Lancashire, England, the duo Vibe Killers have been shredding it with their straight up house music. Mark and Mickey Horsey have been concocting raw house music since 2014, and have seen huge success being recognized from big names such as Hot Since 82, Loco Dice and Jamie Jones. Just finishing their Violater EP released on Hottrax and another single off of Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep in Sound Record Label, 2017 proved to be a monstrous year for the Vibe Killers. Now, the lads are set to kick off the new year with their very own label, Star Cycling Club, which will see its first release in February. We had the pleasure of chatting with the Vibe Killers to hear more about their story and what we can expect from them in the very near future. Read the full interview while listening to Violater EP below:
RR: Hey guys! You just released the Violator EP back in November on Hottrax! What was the production experience like for that one?
Vibe Killers (VK): Yeah, we really enjoyed it. I don’t know if you can tell but on Violator we sampled Kendrick Lamar’s vocal which sits really well in the track. It all came together quite quickly to be fair. Violator for me is one of my favourite tracks; the drums are nice and clean, and it mixes in and out of tracks perfectly. And then there’s that bassline!!
RR: How has it been working with Hottrax?
VK: Very cool. Jamie had been playing our stuff for a while so we sent some bits over that we’d been working on. He took Violator, then it was just a case of nailing the b side, which we did with The Situation. The label itself is run so well, we were kept up to date with all the PR, etc. and how the track was going to be released step by step; they are a perfect example of how to run a record label.
RR: What’s behind the name ‘Violator’ for the most recent EP?
VK: The bassline on Violator just violates your eardrums!
RR: Seems like the underground house/dance scene is perfect for you guys. Are these the sort of events that you guys would go to before producing? Or are big festivals more your scene?
VK: Yes mate, we’ve been attending raves for years now – one of the first places we started off partying at was the legendary Sankeys in Manchester. Personally, I prefer dark underground type spaces – although the big festivals do look sick and they are on our to-do list to play at in the future.
RR: Could you guys elaborate on what your sound is? What or who influenced your musical tastes?
VK: It’s just straight-up house and techno for the main part, but influenced by hip-hop too because we grew up in the 80s and 90s,so you will hear samples and sounds from those eras in pretty much all of our music.
RR: Do you guys have an all time favorite artist?
VK: Hmmmm tricky question – very hard to pick one. Martinez Bros are cool characters who play a nice variety of music.
RR: Where do you see yourselves in the next five years?
VK: I’d like to think more shows in the diary and some bigger parties too – like the large festivals we mentioned above. We’re very happy with where we are at right now, but feel we can grow more yet.
RR: With the year coming to a close, it’s always nice to reflect. In terms of your career, what has been the highlight of the year?
VK: It was releasing on two of our favourite labels – Knee Deep In Sound and Hottrax. Both labels are run amazingly, and the exposure that both releases got for us was mint! Also playing Eden Ibiza this Summer was sick, especially when we turned around to see Todd Terry having it in the DJ booth!
RR: We hear you’ve got a new label launching in 2018? What’s the story behind that?
VK: Yeah we’re buzzing about this one. We have set up and run a few labels in the past, but this one is just going to be our own original tracks. The first release is called “Favelas” and has just gone out on promo ready for release in February. Already been told Jamie Jones played it this Summer at DC10.
RR: Anything else exciting coming up this year that you guys care to share?
VK: Plenty. We have new music coming on Solardo’s label Solâ, an EP on Rawthentic Music which is being relaunched by Carlo Lio and Nathan Barato, a single on NO ART which is run by ANOTR, and shows confirmed for Southampton, London and Manchester.
