We had the pleasure of chatting with up and coming bass artist Snuffy after his massive set at Vibey Desert about his music, inspirations, and what’s in store for the future.
RaverRafting Exclusive Interview:
Can you tell us a little about how you got your start in music?
I’ve always been incredibly passionate about music, but it seemed like some sort of unachievable dream so I put off learning music for a long time. I started my first project on Ableton when I was 21 and had a close friend teach me the fundamentals of the program. I kind of dabbled here and there with making beats and playing house parties In San Luis Obispo, CA. I’d say when I moved to Chico, CA to finish school is when I really started falling in love with music and production. So I decided to change my degree and pursue a degree in music business. I gained a bunch of skills and knowledge from music school that definitely improved the quality of my songs.
The Untz seemed like it was a pretty big event for you, seemed like you gained a lot of traction—how did it feel to be back on stage after Covid?
Thank you! The Untz was one of the greatest weekends of my life. Such a magical experience being on stage after not having any sense of social normalcy for so long. I had a short set, so I really wanted to pack a punch and I had a lot of new music to play in 30 minutes. I am so overjoyed by the response that I got. It was surreal meeting so many people who listen to my music! I hope to be back some year with a full hour set so we can do it proper!
What are some challenges you’ve faced as an artist with finding your sound?
I feel like I am forever finding my sound lol. This is something that I struggled with quite a bit, because I was primarily a sample based producer, and having so many sounds coming from so many different sources my music and sets were not very cohesive. Once I took the time to learn a bit of synthesis I was able to use more familiar sounds song to song that people can identify with as “snuffy”. I am still very much exploring sounds and learning so much. I have always been incredibly open with my growth as an artist and have been releasing music since some of my first songs. This really is just the beginning for me!
Are there any particular artists that you draw influence from or have been particularly impactful for you in your music?
Tsuruda, Carmack, Dr. Derg were some of the first bass artists I had ever heard and inspired me to want to make beats. There are too many amazing artists who Inspire me every day, I am blessed to call many of them friends now. The universe is a crazy thing!
If you could pick a color to describe your music, what color would it be and why?
haha, hmm… I think I’d have to say brown or tan. I like to incorporate a lot of organic sounds in my music and kinda aimed for a safari vibe for some of my most recent sh*t.
Any upcoming projects or releases people can be on the lookout for?
Yes! I finished an EP called “Captive” It has 4 songs, 1 is a collab with P0d and Episcool! I hope everyone likes it. I am going to announce the release date shortly so stay tuned!!
