Ricky Vaughn Continues Recent Onslaught, Drops “Viva La Ricky” EP [Review]

And on the 1st day, Ricky Vaughn loudly proclaimed “Let there be Moombahton!” Or something like that. The Trap Lord/Moombah Maestro is at it yet again with his fresh-off-the-press “Viva La Ricky” EP. Think back to when he was onetime member of the much famed group Sazon Booya. How long ago does that seem now?

Over the past two years Ricky has been relentlessly carving out a place for himself in the world of electronic music with quality release after quality release. Never one to sit idle and always pushing pre-conceived boundaries of all genres, Vaughn’s fans can never quite expect what they’re about to hear when they click play. Unless they’re expecting breathtakingly good production and some of the best moombahton put out today, which in that case we’re getting exactly what we expected.

Appropriately titled Viva La Ricky, Vaughn makes yet another statement with this EP that he is here to stay. Never wanting to be pigeonholed into any particular genre, he instead focuses on doing what he does best and make genre bending tunes. Kicking it off with “Jahan on Me”, which we reviewed here previously, listeners are instantly hooked in with the unparalleled drum work and heavily latin vibes. Seamlessly ushered into the next track “Mis Cuernos”, Vaughn unleashes his horns in some of the smoothest moombah/trap sounds heard yet. Trust me, blending genres like this isn’t supposed to sound this easy, Ricky just makes it seem that way. Next up is “Jumpin”, a collab with Maxx & EJ which is tailor made for peak hour on the dance floor. Last and in no way least, rounding out the EP is “Prendelo”. Arguably the most heavily traditional moombahton track on here. Vaughn is able to make it a sound all his own with his rapidly developing “Ricky Vaughn” feel.

Start to finish you will find each track to be very different, yet somehow remain cohesive in the EP with each one having its own place. With yet another highly energetic production, we can only hope Vaughn will continue to be relentless in his work and churn out masterpiece after masterpiece. Let’s not worry about whether a track is moombahton, or trap, or trance for that matter, and why don’t we settle on giving it a rightful name all its own. How about “Rickyton”?
