The Wall Street Journal has recognized the rise in the demand for Deep House in the US over the past few years and the way independent record label Anjunadeep is supplying. The standard ‘EDM’ portrayed to the masses as mostly high BPM big-room house with harsh drops and repetitiveness is withering as melodic and warm house fused with soul and jazz take the place of the cookie-cutter trend.
Anjunadeep was created in 2005 for the sounds that didn’t quit fit into the more progressive and uplifting records of the Anjunabeats label. It’s the Deep House imprint label of Above & Beyond. James Grant, who scouts and oversees the artist development for the label and manages Above & Beyond, says a combination of things has led to the labels first North American tour, which kicks off at the end of January.
“I wouldn’t say we’ve gone and chased any trends, it’s more like the world has moved toward us suddenly, which is really nice,” Grant told WSJ. “There’s been a sort of perfect storm where the combination of the brand and the history of the label, plus all these exciting new artists has led to a situation where we can do our own shows,” he continued. More widely known artists such as Dusky, 16 Bit Lolitas and Lane 8 have helped solidify the brand reputation. Lane 8 describes the often melodic and emotional music on the label as “dreamy back rub house.” Exciting new artists like Cubicolor and Croquet Club are fueling the upward trend.
Deep House is here to stay for a while. The seven city Anjunadeep North American tour featuring artists including Lane 8, Jody Wisternoff, 16 Bit Lolitas, Beckwith, Lancelot, Martin Roth, and Vincenzo is close to selling out in most cities. The New York and Los Angeles editions boast a special guest.
