RaverRafting spoke to Watermät recently about his newest deep house track ‘Won’t Stop’, featuring the voice of Kelli-Leigh, which takes us back in time to the sound of iconic house classics. This upbeat track has added to the French artist’s extensive collection of house and is especially poignant in the run up to his performance at the People from Ibiza event at London’s Ministry of Sound on Saturday 29th April 2017.
What does the Watermät persona mean to you?
I came up with Watermät as my artist name one summer. I live by the beach in the south of France and sometimes when I’m not in the studio, I try to relax on a “water-mat” in the pool. I thought it matched well with the vibe I am trying to present with my music, which is for people to enjoy good parties and is the type of music I can dance to with my friends behind the turntables.
How did you get into house music and do you feel as if that genre is a perfect fit for you?
My older brother introduced me to the old house music from Chicago and sicne then, I have really enjoyed the genre. A couple of years later I got into French house music, especially the likes of Daft Punk, Cassius or Stardust. I love this genre because it brings a happy feeling with its energy, but also maintains its groove and musicality.
How is the French electronic music evolving differently to the UK or US space?
Personally, I love UK house music because of the way that the bass has started to lead the production in some newly released tracks. However, in my opinion, this is different to French electronic music, as a whole, because it sounds a little more disco. This is part of our culture and it is prevalent in a lot of French music across all genres.
What was your inspiration behind your single ‘Fade’ and what was the thinking behind releasing it now?
“Fade” was made spontaneously as I was testing a new analog synth, so without really trying to, I built the entire track within a couple of hours around the lead sound that can be heard quite easily on the track. It’s a little more progressive house than what I am used to, but I really enjoy playing it live.
What festivals are you playing this summer and which one are you looking forward to the most?
I’m really excited for Tomorrowland as last year was crazy. This year, I will play on the Magician’s stage and I really can’t wait. I’m also really looking forward to play to Electric Forest in US as I’ve heard the vibe is really special and one of a kind, and of course, because I have never played here before.
Do you prefer playing outdoor or indoor venues and why?
I think I prefer clubs, because you feel closer to the crowd. But I love both! That’s not to say that I’m not looking forward to the festival season this year as I have the opportunity to play at a lot of great festivals.
What can we expect from your performance at the People of Ibiza event?
I will play my own versions of my tracks, special edits, and also a lot of my upcoming tracks this year. Together with Kungs, Sam Feldt and Autograph, it will be a great night!
What does the future hold for Watermat?
I just released my new single “Won’t Stop” on the 3rd of April, so I have just been promoting the track and it has been so great to recieve the fantastic feedback. But you will never know what the future will bring. The most important part for me is being happy with the music I produce.
